2018 again will be a year of great development for the UWKF and all its partners and affiliates and we are looking forward
to this with great excitement and anticipation. WE ARE ON OUR WAY! And NO ONE AND NOTHING CAN STOP US
NOW!
The UWKFSA team had its very first International taste of World Class International Karate when the team took part in
the 3rd UWKF/IKU World Championships in Kilkenny Ireland. Kilkenny is about a 2 hours road journey from Dublin. Our
team had some challenges in preparing for participation at these championships. Although a bigger team was selected we
had to contend with a small, very dedicated and focused team comprising of Christo Ross (WP), Monique Sias (GP),
Roxanne Cassim (GP), Ashlin Henricks (WP), Shineen October (WP), Chadley Henricks (WP), and our Chairman of the
Referees Commission Dean Sias. The
team left South Africa on Etihad
Airlines on the 17th October 2017. The
first challenge we had was that
because of the late announcement of
the team, due to unnecessary and
unhanded management of the squad
announcement by Ravi Moodley, the
ex-South African coach, we had to
redo and reassess all athletes and
those eligible for selection- in this
process we found that many suggested
selectees were actually not eligible for
selection but were just put into the
squad for reason unknown to us.
There was no proper selection criteria and the divisions athletes were selected in were different to what was required for
the World Championships. A selection methodology was developed and this is now to be used for the future of team
selections, the following criteria was adopted:
With much effort from Monique Sias and others we managed to get the team mentioned above to
Ireland.
The team stayed at the Kilkenny House Hotel which was a very cozy hotel about 10 minutes taxi
drive from the competition venue. We were the only karate team that stayed at this hotel and this
suited us perfectly.
Every morning the team traveled under some very trying weather conditions and this showed the
spirit the team had wanting to do well for country and self. This manner and attitude is something
we can build on and we have created a solid foundation for the future.
The team performed with excellence and decorum and they made South Africa proud.

Kurobi Ya Oki” seven times down eight times up, Doll with one eye colored is replaced
and the dojo Kamiza (Spirit Place) is cleared new offering of plants is replaced. Rice is pounded and rice Cake
called MOchi is created, Kagami Baraki means “polishing the mirror”. So after a good holiday and rest our mirror gets
hazy and we start the year by getting together and use this day to start polishing the mirror which continues for the whole
year. The doll signifies not giving up and the rice cake signifies giving thanks to THE ALL MIGHTY for giving us a good
harvest so we are nourished for the year.
So we encourage all UWKFSA dojos to celebrate this day on the 27th January 2018, or each province can get together
and have a provincial gasshku to celebrate together in training and having a good morning breakfast. After a good solid
training session and then have their yearly opening meeting to set the agenda for the province.
