UNITED WORLD KARATE FEDERATION SOUTH AFRICA

Volume1. Issue 3 October 2017

2016 AND 2017 WERE TRYING YEARS FOR UWKFSA

RD
3 UWKF/IKU WORLD
The inception of the United World Karate Federation South Africa was 2014
CHAMPIONSHIPS
which started an era of justice and fairness in South African Karate. This
IRELAND
movement started in 2013 when the Honorary President of UWKF Sosai
The first UWKFSA Karate Team to Daikaku Chodoin pleaded and convinced the Executive Chairman of UWKF,
leave on shores since our inception Imtiaz Abdulla to once again attempt to preserve traditional karate and to
in South Africa, was a momentous unify all styles and all karate competition formats into one united karate
and great success. After organization worldwide. After accepting to join this august movement to
implementing a tough criterion for move forward some great Japanese instructors, had major pressure put on
team selection with a clear selection them to distance themselves from the UWKF. Although they remained in the
policy which gave all athletes and Imoto Kaigi (Living Founders Association), meaning senior students of
provinces a fair and unbiased founders of styles, who are still alive. I will not name these instructors to be
chance. Unfortunately, we had some respectful to them for their enormous contribution to karate development
drama from a “drunken master” who and to follow the Budo protocol, to always learn from the Old to improve the
tried to use UWKFSA to launch his new, this is the motto of the UWKF. We decided to continue even without
own organization, well for the their involvement. Although we have their support, this is all due to Japan
future. We wish all those that have winning to host the Olympic Games of 2020 and the possibility of athletes
from Japanese clubs and organization to be automatically be included to
empowered and educated
participate in these games, because Japan is the host country, Japan is
themselves through the UWKFSA
guaranteed ten athletes out of the 80 places. So all organization and vying
well also. As we have always been
for this prestige. We understand this and are waiting for 2021 when South
sincere and steadfast to our aim: -
Africa will host the 1st United World Championships. The following
first and foremost Unity and then
organizations have agreed to be part of these championships. They are now
Development. We will not lose focus
unity members of UWKF i.e. International Karate Union (IKU),
in achieving these ideals. 2018 will
International Karate Kobudo Organization (IKKO), World Karate
be a greater year and we are looking
Confederation (WKC), World Koshiki Karate Federation (WKKF), World
forward to it. Kyokushinkai Karate Union (WKKU), World Fudokan Federation (WFF),
World Martial Arts Games Committee (WMAGC), a member of TAFISA,

which is an endorsed organization under the IOC, and UN.

So we are now represented fully. The United World Karate Federation is also

a founding member and accepted by the SRE a world multi-

sport organization, based in Vienna, Austria, which has become an
alternative to GAISF. A multi-world games will be organized in 2019. So
much has been achieved since our inception and in such record time. Most
World Karate Organizations were created between 10 and 20 years ago, with the World Karate Federation (then WUKO)
in 1970. So sometimes we are too hard on ourselves and don’t sit back and analyze what we have achieved. We should be
proud of every single one of our members who have shown great determination, lasting power and loyalty. UWKFSA
needs quality, anyone believing that they are demi-gods are not welcome in the UWKF. Everyone is equal in UWKFSA as
long as they abide by our constitution and code of conduct and follow the respect and discipline of Budo, the fly by nights
and the “has-beens” have come and gone and we will still be here – in African culture we call this “cleansing”. We are now
lighter, meaner and more determined.

2018 again will be a year of great development for the UWKF and all its partners and affiliates and we are looking forward
to this with great excitement and anticipation. WE ARE ON OUR WAY! And NO ONE AND NOTHING CAN STOP US
NOW!

Report 3rd UWKF/IKU World Championships – Kilkenny, Ireland – 18 to 23 October 2017

The UWKFSA team had its very first International taste of World Class International Karate when the team took part in
the 3rd UWKF/IKU World Championships in Kilkenny Ireland. Kilkenny is about a 2 hours road journey from Dublin. Our
team had some challenges in preparing for participation at these championships. Although a bigger team was selected we
had to contend with a small, very dedicated and focused team comprising of Christo Ross (WP), Monique Sias (GP),
Roxanne Cassim (GP), Ashlin Henricks (WP), Shineen October (WP), Chadley Henricks (WP), and our Chairman of the
Referees Commission Dean Sias. The
team left South Africa on Etihad
Airlines on the 17th October 2017. The
first challenge we had was that
because of the late announcement of
the team, due to unnecessary and
unhanded management of the squad
announcement by Ravi Moodley, the
ex-South African coach, we had to
redo and reassess all athletes and
those eligible for selection- in this
process we found that many suggested
selectees were actually not eligible for
selection but were just put into the
squad for reason unknown to us.
There was no proper selection criteria and the divisions athletes were selected in were different to what was required for
the World Championships. A selection methodology was developed and this is now to be used for the future of team
selections, the following criteria was adopted:

Criteria for Selection

To have a fair and just selection process we need to have some rules and regulations before any member can be selected.
So the following criteria is used for selection:-
1. All persons selected must be a member of the UWKFSA
2. The member must have signed a CODE OF CONDUCT AND HAVE PARTICIPATED IN UWKFSA TOURNAMENT IN 2016 AND
2017
3. That the club must be a member of the province and the province a member of UWKFSA
4. That they are in good standing and have paid up all their responsibilities to UWKFSA
5. That they should have been a member for at least two years
6. All 1st Place winners will be automatically selected at the Parow UWKFSA Nationals and the 2nd Place selected must
have participated at the Women's Cup and presented themselves for selection
7. The following scoring at UWKFSA Nationals will determine selection 1st Place 50 points, 2nd Place 30 points, 3rd Place
10 points
8. Any other championships will score the following points 1st Place 20 points, 2nd place 10 points, 3rd place 5 points
9. to be considered for selection competitors must score minimum of 50 points for 2017 selection
The team was announced on 8th October 2017, this left very little time for athletes to find the
money and to make the arrangements to travel to the World Championships.

With much effort from Monique Sias and others we managed to get the team mentioned above to
Ireland.

The team stayed at the Kilkenny House Hotel which was a very cozy hotel about 10 minutes taxi
drive from the competition venue. We were the only karate team that stayed at this hotel and this
suited us perfectly.

Every morning the team traveled under some very trying weather conditions and this showed the
spirit the team had wanting to do well for country and self. This manner and attitude is something
we can build on and we have created a solid foundation for the future.

The team performed with excellence and decorum and they made South Africa proud.

The following results we achieved

Name Division Placed

Christo Ross Veteran Kata 3rd round
Elimination
Monique Sias Women’s Bronze on

We learned a lot and I am sure the team understands what is required of them- but one thing is
certain WE ARE ON OUR WAY and to get gold next time is not impossible.
Much needs to be done for the next travel out and we need to put many issues in place for us to
be effective and to better prepare and to plug some holes towards making International trips
much better. These will be discussed at our planning meeting in January 2018.
Congratulation to the medal winner and also to Sensei Dean Sias for accomplishing his
qualification as continental Judge. The future is bright let's not get unfocused and let's protect this
prize accomplishment and let's grow UWKFSA for the future. We are United and We are Strong!
Please be informed that United World Karate Federation South Africa has not changed its name to
the United Martial Science Federation as our previous “drunken masters” Ravi Moodley is telling
all UWKFSA members. His organization, United Martia, Arts Federation is his creation and he
appointed himself a 8th Dan and appointed myself President and Technical Director. UMAF is his
organization, only based in Pretoria with maybe 2 clubs, it has no standing in South Africa or
internationally. Also the United World Karate is not the United World Karate Federation and the
head of United World Karate in South Africa is Koos Burger from SASKA – South African Shotokan
Karate Association, So please don’t let yourself be confused with these underhanded practices, if
you need to know something ask and we will answer appropriately. We don’t work on gossip and
misinformation but rather on facts.
Preparation for 2018 – UWKFSA Planning Meeting
Now that all the doomsayers and the distractors have been weeded out of the UWKFSA it is time for seriously taking
Unity, Development Preparation and Participating our founding mottos and instilling it into everything we do. 2018 is a
year of Continental activity and the 1st matter at hand is the UWKFS planning meeting which is scheduled for 20 January
2018 in Johannesburg, SASCOC House, each province including the regions, must bring the following delegates:-

1. Chairperson
2. General Secretary
3. Head of Referees
4. Head of Coaches

Agenda and all arrangements will be communicate soon.

Kagami Baraki – 2018

Al it is done every year in Japan – Kagami Baraki is celebrated for the New year. Mochi Rice is molded and the “Nan

Kurobi Ya Oki” seven times down eight times up, Doll with one eye colored is replaced

and the dojo Kamiza (Spirit Place) is cleared new offering of plants is replaced. Rice is pounded and rice Cake
called MOchi is created, Kagami Baraki means “polishing the mirror”. So after a good holiday and rest our mirror gets
hazy and we start the year by getting together and use this day to start polishing the mirror which continues for the whole
year. The doll signifies not giving up and the rice cake signifies giving thanks to THE ALL MIGHTY for giving us a good
harvest so we are nourished for the year.

So we encourage all UWKFSA dojos to celebrate this day on the 27th January 2018, or each province can get together
and have a provincial gasshku to celebrate together in training and having a good morning breakfast. After a good solid
training session and then have their yearly opening meeting to set the agenda for the province.
