Carefully study the two cartoons above. In this lesson we are going to consider conflict in
relation to the Rohingya people in Myanmar (also known as Burma). Based on your reading
of the cartoons, as well as your own knowledge where appropriate, create a mind map that
shows your current understanding of the situation.

Over the course of this lesson we are going to investigate the issue in more detail in with the
aim that, by the end of the lesson, your mind-map will be much more detailed and, crucially,
based on evidence so that we can answer the question "To what extent is the conflict
affecting the Rohingya in Myanmar/Burma based on identity?'

Begin by reading this article from the Guardian newspaper:

remarks-by-nobel-prize-winners

Now, let's revisit our definitions of conflict, based on the Heidelberg Institute's criteria. Based
on what you have read so far, do you feel this meets the criteria for a conflict and, if so,
which category of conflict?

Answer: Yes, a conflict is a simple sight because in this case, the violence is in
the murders of the Rohingya, this action is in the home of many citizens who are
forced to leave their homes, jobs and some must escape from the country due to
economic problems , or simply by force. Believe that it is a political dispute since it is
the government that does not recognize the Rohingya as an ethnic group and for
those reasons they are executed and the whole conflict is formed.

Now, watch this short video clip from Al-Hidaayah. What does this add to our understanding
of the situation in Rakhine State? How might you develop your mindmap?

Answer: The video tells a lot of details of the reasons of this conflict and shows
also a lot of statistical data that help a lot to understand that the Rohingya people
has lost their homes and rights although many of them escape to bangladesh or
thailand. The mindmap has to be divided in some parts in order to the facts be clear:
The historical, the laws, the ideologies, the lack of human rights, the physical
damages and the population of rohingya. In each part there are the arguments telling
us that it started 50 years ago, in the history part, or that the Rohingya people are
considered by many people as illegal people in myanmar and they are discriminated,
in the legacy part. The video help us a lot to understand the details and the reason of
why there are so much deads and violence from the buddhist people to the muslims.

Take a look at this article from The Sumter Item. What does this add to our understanding?
Does it contradict or support any of the other sources we have looked at? Update your
