Sharing vs.

Grouping Lesson 4- Reviewing Time 55 min

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

 representing and explaining division using equal sharing and equal grouping
 modelling equal sharing and equal grouping using concrete and visual representations, and
recording the process symbolically

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify strategies to solve different word problems
2. Solve word problems using different strategies
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 Math Journals
 Math Journal worksheet
 Counters
 Whiteboards and markers
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
 Kids will cut up worksheets themselves
 Hand out counters for kids to use

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 We are going to practice what we did yesterday (division sentences, sharing,
grouping)
 Sometimes we don’t always understand things right away, and that is why we 5 min
practice. If we keep working hard, and asking questions while we practice we can
learn.
Body Time
Division 1) Review the parts of a division sentence- what order do
Sentences we write them?
2) Practice- finding the answer
o 6/3
o 8/4 10 min
o 16/4
o 14/2
o 15/3
3) Thumbs up/down assessment
Sharing versus 1) Together we are going to make a chart that we can look
Grouping Charts back on when we are doing these problems
2) We are going to create this chart in our math journals, so
you will have it all year. I will make one to put up in class
for you see when you don’t have your journals
15 min
3) Start with Title- Sharing vs. Grouping Chart and date
4) Talk about key word to look for
5) Strategy for each
6) Cut out problems
7) Solve together (using counters)
Sharing versus 1) Let’s go through some practice problems using our
grouping practice charts
2) Do practice problems as a group
3) If students are doing okay they can do questions 15 min
individual, otherwise keep working as a group (maybe
split class into groups?)
4) - Individual station, more help station
Conclusion Time
 We have been practicing different kinds of division problems. We need to be
practicing our strategies and if we get confused- ask questions! There are
different ways to do division, and we are learning them so we can each find a 5 min
strategy that works for us.

Assessment
 Anecdotal notes
 Sharing vs Grouping Worksheet

with 5 of her friends. How many books will each
of her friends get?

Donnie has 15 markers. He wants to have
