4.0 Construction Method and Procedures

The method & procedure for tree and shrub planting

& planting vines follow the steps below. A flowchart
is also provided in Appendix A & B.

4.1 Top Soil Placing

4.1.1 Top soil materials shall be hauled to the

construction area which is approved by Engineers. Laying of top soil shall be commenced
when the centre median is reasonably close to the lines shown on the drawings or
instructed by the Engineer.

4.1.2 Top soil shall be carefully spread to cover the areas ensuring the depth requirement
of technical specification and design drawings.

4.1.3 After spreading the soil, all deleterious materials (large lumps or clods, litters, or
other foreign materials and stones exceeding 75 mm in any dimension) shall be raked up
and removed from site.

4.2 Tree and Shrub Planting

4.2.1 Trees and shrubs shall conform to the requirements of 715.35. The trees and shrubs
shall be true to the type and size indicated on the Drawings." Duranta Erecta Sheena ' s
Gold (Golden Duranta)" shall be used as the Center- Median shrubs.Shrubs planting shall
be in the space of 3 meter.

4.2.2 Notify the Engineer in advance of digging or shipping of plants from the nursery or
collecting source. All plants will be subject to inspection where growing in the nurseries
or collecting areas.

4.2.3 All plants shall be dug carefully, retaining essential roots and avoiding mechanical
damage to root systems. All plants shall arrive with their roots in a moist and healthy
condition.

4.2.4 All such plants shall be so dug and transported as to provide and retain a firm ball of
earth. All balled and all bare-root material shall be adequately protected.

4.2.5 The depth of the hole shall extend 200mm below the depth of the rootball. When
holes present a hazard along the highway, they should be dug immediately prior to
planting.

4.2.6 Planting holes for container grown plants shall be dug to the size required for the
equivalent balled and burlapped plants.

4.2.7 All backfill for planting shall use topsoil.

4.2.8 All balled plants shall be planted so the top of the ball is slightly above the natural
ground level to allow for normal settlement unless otherwise specified on the Drawings.
When planting beds, the individual plants shall be selected and arranged according to
spread and height to present a uniform appearance.

4.2.9 Bare-rooted plants shall be placed in the planting holes with the roots spread out in a
natural position while the specified backfill is placed. Non-plantable containers shall be
carefully removed from all container grown or potted plants immediately prior to
planting.

4.2.10 Sufficient amounts of water, without

puddling, shall be used in the process of planting
to settle the backfill material around the roots or
ball. Additional backfill material shall be placed
and further compaction accomplished by
tamping.

4.2.11 After the planting has been completed, all

planting sites shall be cleaned up. Subsoil, rock,
excess topsoil, and other waste material shall be
removed and disposed of as directed.

4.2.12 All holes dug and not used, or areas disturbed in attempting to find a suitable
planting site, shall be refilled, and the area shall be restored to its original condition and
reseeded.

4.2.13 Maintain the plants in a healthy, living condition during the life of the Contract,
which includes any warranty period indicated in the Contract, and shall maintain an
adequate supply of moisture in the root zone at all times.

4.2.14 When moisture in the root zone is deficient, watering shall be started within 48
hours with sufficient labour and equipment to completely water all the plants within a
two-week period unless otherwise directed by the Engineer.

4.2.15 All maintenance shall be completed according to the program for final acceptance
of the Contract.

4.3 Planting of Vines

4.3.1 The method of planting vine will be determined to a great extent by the site
conditions, namely soil, slope, and type of cover. Methods of planting shall be done as
shown on the Drawings. The nominal number of plants per square metre shall be fifty .

4.3.2 Row Planting--On areas covered with grass or weed mass, the equivalent of a
square 300mm on a side of sod including roots shall be removed and replaced on the
lower side of the plant hole to help retain moisture runoff.

4.3.3 Plant backfill for vines shall be topsoil. For plants in containers or pots 75mm size
or less, the backfill shall be applied at the rate of one half litre per plant. For plants in

5.0 Safety Management and Control

Though this operation does not involve a complex

work, extreme safety measures have to be adapted as
well to protect the workers and resources prior to the
commencement of work
 A tool box talk meeting will be conducted
prior to any work commencing to advise all
workers of the correct and safety procedures that must be observed and undertaken
whilst carrying out the operation.

 The physical conditions of the working crews, especially those who will spread top
soil should also be physically fit, healthy and alert.

 Suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) shall be worn by workers at all times
when working, such as safety shoes, hardhat, gloves, safety belt, etc. as required.

 All embankment will be checked and assured stable prior to allowing workers to
proceed with the work.

 Regular maintenance and cleaning of the pilot road will be undertaken to ensure it is
kept free of top soil spill over from trucks.

6.0 Environmental Protection

To ensure proper care of the environment in general and the community in particular, the
following shall be observed at all times during construction:
 Reasonable precautions shall be taken to avoid injury to existing plant growth,
structures and roadway surface.

 No trees, shrubs or plants outside of the road limit shall be cut, damage or uprooted
during top soil loading and transporting, top soil placing, tree and shrub plants laying
and growth maintenance.

 Water shall be properly diverted to natural drains and prevent them from flowing to
rice paddies and other plantations.

 Gathered large lumps or clods, branches, litters, or other foreign materials and stones
shall be properly disposed to approved permanent disposal areas.

by sitting them inside a binding box or
similar protective equipment.

7.0 Quality Control

Finished product protection measures will be carried

out by pavement subcontractor, most of the centre
median works will be finished before the asphalt
works. When place the top soil on the pavement necessary measures will be applied by
pavement subcontractor.
A standard set of formats for all required records will be used and the list of these formats is a
ttached here for reference as " Appendix C ".
