Lesson: Patterns in Prime factorization

Unit Overview
Main Idea (Claim) Summative Assessment
- Patterns means repeating the same thing or
numbers for math. Make the kids understand
that God is the creator of math and He
himself used patterns too in some parts of
the bible.

Guiding Questions Objectives (know/understand/do/value)

1. What is prime numbers? The student will . . .
2. What is factors? - Be able to define prime numbers, factors and
3. What is pattern? pattern.
4. How did God use patterns? - Be able to identify the pattern in prime
factorization
Time Instructional Procedures and Strategies
15 Beginning the Lesson
1. Review the lesson that we took last time which is prime factorization.
2. Ask them if they remember what is prime number and factor.
3. Ask them if they can think of any pattern used in the bible;
- Give Noah’s story as an example. To be specific, tell them about the time when God told
him to have animals in the ark by pairs
- So the pattern is:
Kind of animal x 2, kind of animal x 2, kind of animal x 2 …

Developing the Lesson

20 1. Tell them that today they are also going to learn patterns in prime factorization by
doubling the given numbers.
For example:
Original Number Number of Exponents Prime factorization
6 1 2x3
12 2 2x2x3
24 3 2x2x2x3
- If we will analyze the pattern in this example, we will see that every time we double the
15 original number, the number 2 which is one of the factors keeps on adding one. So the
pattern is we add another number 2 as we double the original number.
2. If they haven’t understand yet give them another example.
20 Original Number Number of Exponents Prime factorization
22 1 11 x 2
44 2 11 x 2 x 2
88 3 11 x 2 x 2 x 2

3. Once they understand, do an exercise on the board and let them have a chance to answer
on the board.
Original Number Number of Exponents Prime factorization
30 1 5x3x2
60 2 5x3x2x2
120 3 5x3x2x2x2

Closing the Lesson

1. After the exercise, give them a work sheet to work on.
2. After they are done review the things that they have discussed.

Formative Assessment Differentiation

- Board exercise - Discussion for the audio learners
- Worksheet - Showing examples on the board for the
visual learners
- Doing board exercise for the kinesthetic
learners.
