CHAPTER 1

THE PROOBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 INTRODUCTION

What is Dama? Dama is a popular board game all over the world. It is played on an eight
by eight squared board with twelve pieces on each side. The pieces move and capture
diagonally. They may only move forward until they reach the opposite end of the board,
when they are crowned or kinged they can move and capture both backward and forward.

What is Mathematics? Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape,
quantity and arrangement. Math is all around us, in everything we do. It is the building block
for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices, architecture (ancient and
modern), art, money, engineering, and even sports.

DaMath is a two-player educational board game, it’s a combination of the board game
"Dama" (Filipino word for Checkers) and Mathematics. Where players have to do
mathematical computation whenever they capture an opponent’s chip. It uses the 4 basic
mathematical operators. This game is commonly played in all elementary and secondary
schools in the Philippines. The game boosted its popularity and since then the game has been
played in school in the Philippines.

This Board game can be used as educational purposes, as have been proven to help
stimulate the minds of the children in a fun and informative way. Learning things like
mathematical operations can be difficult for young children nowadays, usually depending on
their age. It has also been long proven that most children have a better time learning skills
when they are presented in a fun, interactive format, and giving educational math board
games on which to make their stand. This application game aims to help young children to
develop their math skill while having fun playing the game.

Mobile applications are now becoming popular and powerful in the community as time
progressed. Almost everything you can think of doing in desktops – gaming, doing word
processing, spreadsheets, education, entertainment can be done with flicks of a wrist or taps
on a small touchscreen. Due to the sheer advancement of computer technology, sitting on a
computer doing documents, calculating statements, watching and streaming media content,
and reviewing transactions can now be close to an afterthought.

DaMath Mobile Application is a two-player educational board game. DaMath board

game on android is an educational board game application. This Board game can be used as
educational purposes, to help stimulate the minds of children in a fun and informative way.

1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As time goes by, as the years passes by there are so many improvement in today’s
technology. When we say technology from the Greek word technologia it has something to
do that it has the capacity to improved individual’s life. Like us, we are in the modern day
where everything is new, everything is fast and everything is modern. The huge example of
this is cellular phones. Way back year 2000. The only purpose of cellular phones is for good
communication and connection. Then they add some flavor for the sake of all users to avoid
dull moments, Games. Games like snake, memory game and etc. The cellular phone
technology at yesteryears has already made a big leap as it can now function like a personal
computer.
We are planning to create Damath board game application, a two-player educational
board game combining the board game "Dama" (Filipino word for Checkers) and Math. This
game boosted its popularity before and since then the game has been played in school in the
Philippines. It prefers that players have to do mathematical computation whenever they
capture an opponent’s chip and it uses the 4 basic mathematical operators.
This Board game can be used as educational purposes, as have been proven to help
stimulate the minds of children in a fun and informative way. Learning things like
mathematical operations can be difficult for young children, usually depending on their age.
It has also been long proven that most children have a better time learning skills when they
are presented in a fun, interactive format, and giving educational math board games on which
to make their stand.
Playing game of the DaMath required board and pieces for every variation, this is the one
problem of traditional play; players need to bring board and pieces to be able to play with the
corresponding pieces for every variation. The proponents then decide to propose a game that
will able to solve the problems of traditional way of playing DaMath. The proposed system
entitled DaMath Boardgame in Android will be having factors like: adding a twist with a new
trend in information industry; will be going to accommodate many variations of DaMath; in
terms of opponents, the propose game cab be played multiplayer or against the computer.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What are the demographic profile of players in terms of Smartphone Proficiency/literacy

2. Is the proposed game able to strengthen the player’s cognitive skills?
3. How will respondents assess the game developed by the proponents in terms of”
a. Variation
b. Features
1. Single Player
2. Multiplayer
c. Game Play
1. Game Controls
2. Audio
3. Graphics
4. User Interface
5. Game Rules

1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

SCOPE
 The app has a different mathematics formula up to simple addition until the
trigonometry in high school.
 It has a start, pause, high score chart, and instruction.
 Can be played by Single and Multiplayer.
 It is 2D game.

LIMITATIONS
 The system cannot be implemented in pc based system.
 It is software created only for touch screen pads, or touchscreen phones.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will benefit primary and secondary Math teachers and also the students
of our school or maybe if it works well, then of our world. It will help the teachers to
teach this basic math operations and logic using their mobile phones on class. This
application will hold complete and legit information that are needed by the user. There
will be set of instructions inside the game and no data charges required at all time. This is
also very helpful to the proponents, it allows giving deep knowledge about research, and
about the overall functionality of the program which is the DaMath App.

1.6 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

• Damath - is a two-player educational board game combining the board game

"Dama" (Filipino word for Checkers) and Math.
• App - is an abbreviated form of the word "application." An application is a
software program that's designed to perform a specific function directly for the
user or, in some cases, for another application program.
• Software - in its most general sense, is a set of instructions or programs
instructing a computer to do specific tasks. Software is a generic term used to
describe computer programs. Scripts, applications, programs and a set of
instructions are the terms often used to describe software.
• Online App - Discovery Service- collects server specification information,
performance data, and details of running processes and network connections.
• Android - has evolved a lot over the years and has quickly become the dominant
mobile platform across the globe. While most of us know exactly what Android
is, and how to use it, there are still a number of folks that are new to Google’s
mobile OS, finally ditching that old-school mobile phone or making the move
from iPhone or another Android rival.
• Android-based mobile version - acquired by users by downloading and
installing the application's APK (Android application package) file, or by
downloading them using an application store program that allows users to install,
update, and remove applications from their devices.
