Grade: Grade 7: Science Activity: Transfer of Energy

Goals/Key
Goals:
-Students will learn how energy is transferred
-Students will learn the 5 characteristics of energy transfer systems

GLO: Describe the nature of thermal energy and its effects on different forms of matter, using informal
observations, experimental evidence and models
SLO: 2.1 explain how heat is transmitted by conduction, convection and radiation in solids, liquids and
gases

Pre lesson Considerations

Lesson overview of main scientific content, skills to be learned
-Students will learn how energy is transferred
-Students will learn the 5 characteristics of energy transfer systems
TO DO BEFORE LESSON:
-Load the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUEPGMnRqGs

Content:
What is the teacher doing? What are the students
doing?

ASK: What were the 3 types of energy transfer?

Introduction DO: Pick students to answer
Time: -Radiation
-Conduction
-Convections

DO: Load the video

Transition ASK: How many of you have every played volleyball?

considerations DO: See how many have

ASK: How many of you have ever spiked a volleyball

Activity 1 before?
Time: DO: See how many have
DO: Get the volleyball from your desk
SAY: We are going to be analyzing how we spike a
volleyball to understand how the energy is transferred
from us to the ball.

Transition DO: Pull up the PowerPoint

considerations
SAY: What is happening to the energy when I do this?
Activity 2 DO: Swing my arm like I am going to hit it.
DO: Pick some students to answer.
Time Est:
DO: Go through the PowerPoint.

SAY: There are 5 characteristic that all energy transfer

systems have in common.

A energy transfer system are not just about humans or

sports Hair dryers, bike brakes, weather
systems and ocean currents are all examples.

Energy sources-some have mechanical energy (like

spring), some have chemical energy (like gas),
nuclear energy (like power plants), or electrical
energy (radios, power-tools, appliances)

1. ASK: What is the energy source for my

volleyball spike?
- Mechanical energy
2. ASK: What are 3 things that end up sharing
part of Carrie’s original energy?
- The ball
- The floor
- Air particles
3. DO: Look at the picture
4. ASK: What are 2 things that are warmed by
waste heat from my volleyball spike?
- Air
- Ball
5. ASK: What is the energy control source for our
volleyball spike?
- How strong the player is

SAY: Now it is your turn. You are going to analyze the

energy transfer of a curling shot. So please partner up.
DO: Load the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwz-cicOUFk

Play the video 3 times.

SAY: You have the rest of this class to analyze the shot
and we will go through it tomorrow!!

SAY: Thanks for working so hard today on this

Conclusion analysis!!!

Assessment: Formative assessment of students understanding of energy transfer

Accommodations/Modifications: IPP students will partner up with students that can help them through
the exercise.

Extension and extra time activity: Have students come up for a way to remember the 5 characteristics
