5314.01 Description. This section describes furnishing and placing
6geotextile as a permeable separator on a prepared surface.

13
14 (A) Site Preparation. Prepare surface in accordance with Section
15 305 - Aggregate Subbase Course.
16
17 (B) Installation. Unroll geotextiles smoothly on prepared surface in
18 longitudinal direction. Do not drag geotextiles. Remove wrinkles and
19 folds by stretching and anchoring. Overlap geotextiles a minimum of 3
20 feet at longitudinal and transverse joints, or sew geotextiles with 9-inch
21 overlap at sheet intersections. When subgrade soils have California
22 Bearing Ratio (CBR) of less than 1, use sewn seams.
23
24 (C) Sewn Seams. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations for
25 seam, stitch type, and stitching equipment. Seam strengths for both
26 factory-sewn and field-sewn seams shall be equal to or greater than 90
27 percent of grab strength as measured in accordance with ASTM D 4632.
28 Unless otherwise indicated in the manufacturer’s recommendations,
29 comply with the following requirements:
30
31 (1) Use seams with two parallel rows of stitching, 1/2 inch plus
32 or minus 1/4 inch apart.
33
34 (2) Sew seams with lock stitch (Federal Stitch Type 401).
35
36 (3) When using flat or prayer seam (Type SSa-2), provide
37 minimum distance of 1-1/2 inches between geotextile edge and
38 stitch line nearest to that edge. For other seam types, provide
39 minimum seam allowance of 1 inch.
40
41 (D) Geotextile Placement. Hold geotextiles in place by pins,
42 staples, or piles of permeable material. On curves, fold or cut
43 geotextiles to conform to curve, with appropriate overlap or seam.
44 Install fold or overlap in direction of permeable material placement.
45
46 (E) Geotextile Exposure Following Placement. Limit time
47 exposure of geotextiles to natural elements, between placement and
48 cover, to a maximum of five days. Construction equipment and

49 vehicular traffic will not be allowed directly on geotextiles.

50
51 (F) Permeable Material Placement. Deposit permeable material in
52 accordance with Section 306 - Untreated Permeable Base Course.
53
54 (G) Damage Repair. Geotextile will be considered damaged if it is
55 torn or punctured, if overlaps or sewn joints are disturbed, or if there is
56 evidence of subgrade pumping, intrusion, or roadbed distortion. Repair
57 damaged geotextile by removing permeable material around damaged or
58 displaced area and by replacing damaged geotextile with a patch of same
59 type of geotextile. Overlap existing geotextile a minimum of 3 feet from
60 edge of damaged area, or repair damaged sheets by sewing. Replace
61 and compact removed permeable material.

63314.04 Measurement. The Engineer will not measure permeable separator
64for payment.
65
66314.05 Payment. The Engineer will not pay for permeable separator
67separately and will consider the cost for permeable separator as included in the
68contract price for the untreated permeable base course pay item. Payment will
69be full compensation for the work prescribed in this section and the contract
