Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Kahoot Activity. This activity will be constructed of 5

questions about expository and narrative writing and will give me a general sense of
what students know about each topic. (Pre-assessment)

Expectations for Learning & Behaviour: Electronic devices are to be used

constructively, not for texting/social media. Attention on me when I am speaking. Be
respectful and attentive when I’m teaching. Also, when putting together interactive
foldable, if you make a mess clean it up.

Advance Organizer/Agenda: Have interactive foldable copied and ready to go. Have
Kahoot pulled up on the smart board. Note books ready to be handed out.

Transition to Body: Let’s look at some examples.

*Discuss the importance of essay writing in language arts – measures a student’s
critical thinking skills, understanding different concepts or material, displays a
students’ writing skills. Up to this point in their academic career, students have only
done narrative writing. But, for the most part, students from now on will be doing
essay writing for the rest of junior high, high school and college/university.
*Bring in a personal story to allow students to relate.
Body:
Key Questions: What is the goal or main idea of expository writing?

Learning Activity #1: Reading of “What is a Friend” by Kim McCallum (L.O #2)
 Students will be sitting in their desks, and listen to me read the poem.
 There will be a discussion after. What is the point of this poem? What do you
think the author is trying to say? Students will identify that the author is trying to
explain what it is like to be a poet, which is like an expository essay – to
explain something.

Assessments/Differentiation: I will be looking to see if students can make connections

between the poem and what they know about expository writing.

Key Questions: What is the goal or main idea of expository writing? How is this song
like expository writing? If the artist decided to write an essay instead of a song, would
it be on the same topic?

Learning Activity #2: Listening to “Good Ol Hockey Game” by Stompin Tom (L.O
#2). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg2G5gf9GHk
 Students will sit in their desks and listen to the song.
 Same as Learning Activity #1, there will be a discussion after. What is the
point of the song? What do you think the artist is trying to say?

Assessment/Differentiation: I will be looking to see if students can make connections

between the song and an expository essay.

Key Questions: What is expository writing? What is the difference between

expository writing and narrative writing?

Learning Activity #3: Interactive Foldable (L.O #3).

 Students will cut out the template and fold/glue it into their notebook. (they will
have 10 minutes to do so).
 As a class, we will fill in each component together. I will write the information
on the board and give examples as we go. More specifically, students will be
given a definition, and together will be create an example, visual representation
to go with it and a non-example.

Assessment/Differentiation: Some students may require extra time. If needed, this

lesson may have to be finished at the start of lesson 2. I’ll be looking that students
participate in discussion and help me come up with examples.

Sponge Activity: Students can work on their vocabulary books.

Closure:
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Praise students for their good work.

Transition to Next Lesson: Next class we will look more into the differences between
narrative and expository writing.

What Is A Friend?
By Kim McCallum

A friend is someone you hold dear

Someone who is always there, through thick and thin
Someone who is only a phone call away

A friend is someone you can always rely on

Someone who is there to share your thoughts with
Someone to listen, no matter the subject

A friend is someone you can feel comfortable with

Someone you can sit silently beside, without conversation
Someone you do not need to fill the quiet moments with

A friend is someone you can trust

Someone who will guard your deepest secrets
Someone who will never let you down

A friend is someone who is not judgmental

Someone who will gently offer advice and opinions,
Yet, someone who is not overbearing or critical

A friend is someone who can keep you grounded

Someone who can help you see through your obstacles
Someone to shoulder you through life’s trials

A friend is someone who shares unconditionally

Someone to laugh and to cry with
Someone to lean on, through both the good and bad

A friend is someone you can choose wisely

For a friend is you own mirrored image
Someone to compliment your own self
Someone who indicates who you are as a person

Good Ol’ Hockey Game

Hello out there, we're on the air, it's 'Hockey Night' tonight.
Tension grows, the whistle blows, and the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps, and the players bump, and the fans all go insane.
Someone roars, "Bobby Scores!", at the good ol' Hockey Game.

(Chorus)

OH! The good ol' Hockey game, is the best game you can name.
And the best game you can name, is the good ol' Hockey game.

Second Period.

Where players dash, with skates aflash, the home team trails behind.
But they grab the puck, and go bursting up, and they're down across the line.
They storm the crease, like bumble bees, they travel like a burning flame.
We see them slide, the puck inside, it's a 1-1 hockey game.

(Chorus)

Third Period. Last game of the playoff too!

Oh take me where, the hockey players, face off down the rink.
And the Stanley Cup, is all filled up, for the champs who win the drink.
Now the final flick, of a hockey stick, and the one gigantic scream.
"The puck is in! The home team wins!", the good ol' hockey game.

(Chorus x3)

(It's in!)(He shoots, he scores!)(Henderson scores for Canada!)
