Let's Do It!
When it comes to convincing, there's no better suffix than -elim. When put on the end of a verb, it means
something like let's do this. Here are some examples for you to get the idea:
Gidelim.
Let's go.
Konuşalım.
Let's talk.
Uyuyalım.
Let's sleep.
Because of its vowel harmony, you'll also see -alım instead of -elim. They're the exact same suffix - they're just
spelled slightly differently to match the vowels in the verb. You'll also see an extra y before -elim when its added to
verbs that end in a vowel. Turkish hates putting two vowels together, so it separates them with a y in this case.
Koşalım!
Let's run!
Türkçe öğrenelim!
Let's learn Turkish.
Film izleyelim.
Let's watch a movie.
Responding to Requests
If you're making the rounds as a tourist in Turkey, you'll very likely be offered something at some point (especially
in the bazaar).
To refuse a request (usually because you don't want to be suckered into a sales pitch), you can just say no, thank
you.
If you really want to make your point, you can also use these:
-Otur. -İstemiyorum.
-Sit. -I don't want to.
I Don't Smoke
Everybody smokes in Turkey. Not really, but sometimes it seems that way. Smoking is more prevalent in Turkey
than any other western European country.
So, it might be useful to know how tell someone that you don't smoke (unless you do, in which case teşekkürler is
all you need). Amusingly, Turkish uses the verb içmek (to drink) to also say to smoke. That's right - Turks drink
their cigarettes. It's almost always preceded by sigara, though, unless it's clear from the context that you're talking
about smoking.
