Title: European Cultures: Paris and Amsterdam Lesson #:_1_ of _1_

Lesson Idea/Topic and The students will be listening to a presentation on my recent trip to Europe. The
Rational/Relevance: presentation includes interesting facts about the cultures of the two cities I visited.
This is relevant to the current class material because they are studying the cultures
of different African tribes. Students of this age need to be taught with a multi-
cultural perspective so they can be more accepting of the diversity within their own
country.

Student Profile: There are 3 autistic kids in the classroom with their own adult helpers. There
are also students who struggle with comprehension so will need to have
new ideas explained slower and clearer.

Content Standard(s) addressed by this lesson: “Develop spatial understanding, perspectives, and personal connections to the world.” From the Geography 7 th
Grade Social Studies standards.

Understandings: Students will understand the differences between two European cities and recognize the cultural differences between the United States, Africa,
and Europe.

Inquiry Questions: What are some differences in the cultures discussed today? What are some similarities? Why do different cultures exist?

Evidence Outcomes:

Every student will be able to: Learn interesting facts about Paris and Amsterdam while also understanding the new and different cultures.

I can: Relate the different cultures of Paris and Amsterdam and find similarities and differences.

This means: I can understand how different cultures can be related to one another.

List of Assessments: Journals will be reviewed post-presentation to make sure notes were taken and questions were answered.

Planned Lesson Activities

Name and Purpose of Lesson European Cultures: Students will be able to compare the cultures of two European cities
and relate the differences to the cultural groups they are studying in Africa.

Co-Teaching Which model(s) will be used? One Teach/One Observe

Will co-teaching models be utilized in this lesson?
Yes ___ No _X__ Why did you choose this model(s) and what are the teachers’ roles?
The students work best when a teacher is in front of them explaining new ideas. They can
follow along more and ask questions. It would be distracting to have two adults
explaining these ideas. They need to focus on one person.

Approx. Time and Materials 25-30 minutes. PowerPoint Presentation. Student journals for notes and questions.

Anticipatory Set The strategy I intend to use is: Previewing.

I am using this strategy here because: I asked the students if they had left the country
before and what cultures they experienced so they can begin thinking about different
cultures prior to learning about the cultures of Paris and Amsterdam.

Procedures The strategy I intend to use is: Lecturing

I am using this strategy here because: Students do not have prior knowledge on this topic
and need to hear it from me first.

Teacher Actions Student Actions Data Collected

follow-up questions. students remain engaged.

Closure The strategy I intend to use is: Review – I will ask the students to share their favorite facts
from the presentation and relate it to the cultures they are studying in Africa.
I am using this strategy here because: It is essential to know that students have learned
the right facts from the presentation and have asked all the questions they need to
understand fully.

Assessment Students are participating in the presentation by asking questions or answering predicting
questions before new information is presented. They are actively taking notes in their
journal on what they learned and participating in the ending class discussion to make
connections between Africa and Europe.

Post Lesson Reflection

1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize assessment data to justify
your level of achievement)

For the most part, I believe the lesson objectives were achieved. After I took a quick lap
around the classroom, I was left feeling proud of the information that was recorded by
the students during the presentation. They also asked many insightful questions during
the presentation to prove they were understanding the different cultures experienced.

2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to
teach again?

I would like to be clearer on the amount of time I allow for questions and discussions.
The students spent more time asking questions than they did having a productive
follow-up discussion so they may not have made very strong connections to the
material like I wanted them to.

3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach content, etc.)

The students are currently working on a cultural project with tribes in Africa. To continue
the practice of understanding new cultures, I would like to give a lecture on why culture is
important. The students can recognize different cultures, but I think there is a lack of
understanding as to why different cultures exist and why this matters to them. I think this
kind of lecture would be good closure for this unit.

4. If you used co-teaching, would you use the same co-teaching strategy for this lesson if
you were to teach it again? Were there additional co-teaching strategies used during
the lesson not planned for initially? Please explain.

I did not use co-teaching during this lesson. Mr. Nickel was out of the building and I led
the entire class on my own.
