Ongoing upgrade/life extension and structural integrity assessment has been undertaken for Gulf of Mexico
(GOM) first and second generations type offshore structure in Bass Strait. The structural integrity
assessments of these platforms were required due to the platforms upgrade and updated environmental
design criteria. Strengthening, modification and repair programs were developed due to damage, change of
use or updated loadings including addition struts to four first generation platforms. It was also included the
repairs or replacements for damaged caissons, risers and clamps. An extensive study including prototype
testing and FE analysis was carried out for establishing the acual strength of complex joints of all first
generation platforms.
The study investigated options to enhance the riser guard performances for Bass Strait offshore platforms
for boat impact. The pilot study riser guards were selected based on type and population of the guards,
condition reports and the minimum gap between the guard and the riser. The possible enhancement
options were developed to improve reliability of the guards. An assessment criterion was developed to
design and evaluate the enhancement options. The enhancement options was evaluated and ranked based
on a comparison table including cost, constructability, energy absorption and structural requirements,
additional protections and impact response performance.
Saudi Aramco’s focus for the MPP in 2007 was the completion of the engineering construction
packages for the platforms based on the ‘3S’ design principles (Standardize, Simplify and make
Simultaneous Operations capable) developed by WorleyParsons Petrocon.
The work encompassed 12 platforms and substantial tie-ins to existing facilities. WorleyParsons
assisted Saudi Aramco on the refurbishment of the Marjan field ESD/control systems and various
studies for the Karan field.
Since commencing work on the MPP project in 2003, our team has delivered 40 new platforms, 85
platform upgrades, 165 km of pipelines, 100 km of submarine power cables, five cranes and over
300 well hook-ups.
Over the next three to five years, the program anticipates including approximately ten platforms in
the next work release, potentially followed by the major redevelopments of the Safaniya, Zuluf
and Berri fields, with Safaniya alone including the installation of approximately 35 new platforms.
This experience, coupled with initiatives such as 3S, ensures WorleyParsons continues to provide
cost effective solutions for Saudi Aramco’s challenging development program.
The structural integrity assessment of Marlin A (MLA) platform was required due to addition of topside facilities and the
platform life extension until year 2039. An increase in metocean criteria (e.g. wave inundation) was also considered in
conjunction with the additional loads. The topside modifications were included the following:
• Bridge Landing on the North-West corner of the platform to support the 60 m bridge linking MLA and Marlin B (MLB)
• Process and utility modification
• New temporary living quarters in addition to the existing living quarters
• Brucker upgrades
• Rig 22 facilities
Since the MLA platform does not meet the requirements of design level check, the reserve strength and reliability
assessments were undertaken to develop the strengthening options select report and establish
the Risk Based Inspection (RBI) program.
Our business has been built by working closely with our customers
through long term relationships, anticipating their needs and delivering
inventive solutions through streamlined, proprietary project delivery
systems. Strong growth continues to characterize our performance both
through organic development, and through strategic acquisition, as we
strive to provide tailored services wherever our customers need us.
