We often come across news, showcasing the effect of bullying in schools and the side effects on the

harmed students. There are various types of bullying experienced in schools among the students like
teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, spitting, and embarrassing others in public place. All these
actions may assault one’s dignity. The effect of bullying on the children is so negative, that it may
damage their academic performance. It may force students to even commit suicide. It harms the
students not only mentally but physically, emotionally, and socially. The cause of bullying varies from
case to case. The assault may be due to some personal reasons or out of jealousy or it may depend
upon the family background of bullies. Such families are considered to be dysfunctional as they are
not interested in knowing about their child activities in school. With ignorance comes fear and the
fear leads to dogmatism. Education is the key to acceptance. Such cases can be avoided by the
combined efforts of school, parents and of course with the help of school students. It is said that with
time, everything settles down, but in such cases, we can’t wait for time otherwise something bad may
happen and then no one will be able to handle its consequences.

Cherokee Billie said, “Never underestimate how your words can shift the atmosphere, change an
environment, and inspire a heart. Words do create worlds. When the bully uses the rude and harsh
word against its victim. The victim tends to create a self-loathing, vulnerable and insecure world. To
feel as if they were being pulled into a never-ending downward spiral. At best, the young person feels
stuck in one place, seeing no way out of the predicament. This will lead them to be psychologically
affected and over the years to be clinically depressed. Besides that, covert bullying such as
threatening others is considered using words and behaviours imply or involve emotional pain and
physical pain.Threatening behaviours include playing with or cleaning weapons while looking at you
threateningly, blocking you in a room or corner, “puffing up” or getting in your face while in
conversation.

All forms of bullying can be causing mental and physical harm to the victims. In the older children and
teens, the effects of bullying are often more internalized.During their teen years, young people crave
dependence and do not want assistance. They will, therefore, attempt to deal with their problems on
their own. Because their coping skills are not developed enough at this age to deal with a complicated
situation of bullying they begin to internalize the problem and develop a sense of helplessness. This
can result in depression and anxiety disorders. When left unchecked, this anxiety can even begin to
manifest itself as eating disorders, most commonly as anorexia and bulimia especially in female
victims.Spreading rumour and lying about someone can create a vicious cycle for the victim in their
social life. In an attempt to protect themselves from the bullying situation, they will become very
clingy to adult figures. This is interpreted by their peers as being “a baby”. This does nothing but
increases the teasing that is already troubling the child. The more a child gravitates toward teachers
and adults hoping to be protected, the harsher becomes the bullying. This is especially destructive
during the pre-teen years when children are trying to understand how to develop personal
relationships with peers. This can have lifelong consequences on an individual’s ability to bond with
others
