Dear Parents and Guardians,

I’m so very excited to have your child in my 6th grade math class. This year will be full of
exciting explorations into various math concepts. Students will begin the year exploring various
number systems, including the introduction of negative numbers. We will also investigate algebraic
equations, geometry concepts, ratios and rates, and many other math concepts this year.

This will be my first year teaching at Brand New Middle School. I previously taught 6 th grade
math for 3 years at Connell Middle School. I grew up in Southern California and graduated from
Scripps College in Claremont California. I have lived in San Antonio for the past 14 years. I have an
8 year old son and 6 year old daughter keep me busy when I’m not teaching. In addition to math I
enjoy reading and crocheting.

Here is some information regarding important classroom procedures.

Beginning class:
1. Students will enter the classroom silently and proceed to the student materials table at the
front of the room and collect the materials for the day from the materials tray.
2. They will then proceed to their assigned seat.
3. At their desks they will look at the board for the supplies they need to have out and
instructions.
4. Once they have out their supplies, they will then place all other items including backpacks,
phones, and water bottles under their seats.
5. Students will then write down their homework assignment in their agenda.
6. They will then begin working on their opening assignment.

Restroom Breaks:
1. Student will write bathroom on their agenda for that date and leave their agenda open on
their desk to be initialed by the teacher during the class period.
2. The student will then raise their hand with the bathroom signal.
3. Once the teacher has acknowledged the bathroom signal, student will go to the door and sign
out on the clipboard at the door with their name date and time and take the bathroom pass
with them.
4. When students return to class the will write their return time on the sign out sheet and
return to their desk.
5. Once their agenda has been initialed by the teacher they may put their agenda away.
Coming to attention
1. The teacher will stand in the same spot of the room each time.
2. The teacher will used the phrase “Your attention will be on me in” and then count down from
5 to one while holding her hand in the air and using her fingers to count down.
3. As students notice the teacher they will quiet down and silently raise their hands and
countdown using their fingers with the teacher.
4. At one the teacher will say “Eyes on me, hands free.” At this point students will silently be
looking at the teacher with nothing in their hands

Homework
Homework is an important component of class as it allows students the opportunity to practice the
concepts we’ve learned in class. Homework will be assigned Monday – Thursday and due the
following day. Homework should take your student approximately 10 to 20 minutes a night. Daily
homework assignments should be written in your student’s agenda.
1. After students sit at their desks and have their supplies out, they are to copy down tonight’s
homework assignment in their agenda. It will be written on the homework section of the
board.
2. They will place last night’s homework on the left hand of their desk so the teacher may check
it while they are working on their opening assignment.
3. After the opening assignment the teacher will review what tonight’s assignment is and then
answer any questions regarding last night’s homework.
4. At the end of class, the teacher will once more remind students about the night’s homework
assignment.
