6TH Grade Math First Week of Instruction

Unit 1- 18 days

Day 1- TEKS 6.2B Identify a number, its opposite and its absolute value

Activity: Discuss the concept of positive and negative numbers and where we see them in real life. Examples:
Below Zero, Below sea level, Building floor numbers, Credit card bills. Have students work together to create a
T-chart with words that denote a positive number and words that denote a negative number. Show students a
number line and ask students to place numbers on the number line based if the number is positive or
negative. Have students create a foldable with the terms Positive numbers, Negative numbers, opposites,
integers on the flaps and the definitions and a number line inside. Make sure to color code negative and
positive for students.

Day 2- TEKS 6.2A Classify whole numbers, integers and, rational numbers using a visual representation such as
a Venn Diagram to describe the relationships between sets of numbers

Activity: Introduce the vocabulary words whole number, integers and rational numbers to students. Play this
is; this is not a ___________ for each term. Ask students to classify various numbers into a Venn Diagram as a
class and then into groups. Finally have students create Frayer Squares for each of the three terms using their
own definitions.

Day 3- TEKS 6.2E Extend representations for division to include fraction notation such as a/b represents the
same number as a÷b where b≠0.

Activity: Review the terms numerator and denominator, dividend, divisor and quotient with students. Tell
them the story about how Cowboy Numerator rides around on Donkey Denominator all day long. At the end
of the day Cowboy numerator gets to go inside the division house and Donkey Denominator is stuck outside.
Have students work in groups to create their own ways to remember that the fraction symbol means division
and that the top number not the big number is dividend and the bottom number is always the divisor. Have
students practice using the fraction to set up the division problem

Day 4 - TEKS 6.2C Locate, compare and order integers and rational numbers using a number line.

Activity: Review terms whole number, rational number, integer, numerator and denominator with class. Make
sure to review how students can turn fractions into decimals and how decimals can be turned into fractions.
Present to the class a number line and have them place cards in the correct spot on the number line. Make
sure to ask them. How do you know it goes there? How can you find where this fraction goes in relation to this
decimal? Have students then work in pairs to place numbers on their own number line. Each pair needs to
include 6 numbers they made up 2 numbers containing decimals, two integers and two numbers that are
fractions.

Day 5- TEKS 6.2C Locate, compare and order integers and rational numbers using a number line.

Activity: Review yesterday’s lesson and review with students the greater than and less than sign. Have
students place two numbers on a number line and compare the numbers. Make sure students practice
comparing large negative numbers to small positive numbers and practice comparing decimals to fractions.
Ask students to use the list of positive number and negative number denoting words we created on Day 1 to
write a word problem involving comparing numbers. Have students record in their journals how using a
number line can help, when comparing numbers. Answers should look something like the number to the
leftmost on the number line will always be the smallest.
