Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Kathleen Cannon, Alyssa Madara, Date: 3-2-18

Omni White, Danielle Murphy

Group Size: Whole Class Allotted Time: 60 minutes Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Subject or Topic: Muscular System

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

Standard - 10.1.3.B Identify and know the location and function of the major body organs and
systems.
• circulatory
• respiratory
• muscular
• skeletal
• digestive

Learning Targets/Objectives:
• Students will classify the 3 types of muscle in the human body by completing the interactive
power point on the Muscular System:

e/eeec3b92-a897-4778-8060-aca69b9724e8/Muscular%20system%20lesson.notebook#
• Students will complete a foldable by using the information provided in the interactive power
point.
• Students will be able to accurately place and label where the stomach, triceps, biceps, quads,
abs, heart and large / small intestine are located on a human body diagram.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1.Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down 1.How many thumbs up / down
2.Checklist 2.The students that I choose
3. Have the students complete the quiz at the 3. The students scores on the quiz
end of the smart exchange lesson on the iPads
(if they have access)

Assessment Scale:
2. yes = if the students answer was correct / no = if the students answer was incorrect
3. 4 or below= non satisfactory ; 5 to 7= satisfactory ; 8 to 10 = excellent
Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
• basic understanding of muscles in the body
• basic understanding of where muscles are located in the body
• basic understanding of what your muscles do for you

Key Vocabulary:
• Smooth Muscle - not striped and makes up the lining of many of our organs, (involuntary
muscle) these muscles are located inside your body (stomach, intestines, bladder)
• Cardiac Muscle - striped muscle tissue that is found in the heart (involuntary muscles) ex.
the heart which is located on the left side of your chest.
• Skeletal Muscle - striped that is connected to the bones in the skeleton by tendons (voluntary
muscles) these are muscles that are located all over your body (quads, triceps, abs, deltoids,
etc.)
• Involuntary - are muscles that work without you having to think about them. Examples:
your heart and lungs (breathing)
• Voluntary - muscles that you control (the muscles in your arms, legs, head, face, back, etc)
• Tendons - flexible tissue that attaches muscle to bone

Content/Facts:
What is the main function of the muscular system?
• It works with your skeletal system to help your body move
How many muscles are in the human body?
What are the two types of muscles in the human body?
• Involuntary - are muscles that work without you having to think about them
• Voluntary - muscles that you control
How many different special types of muscles are there?
• Smooth Muscle - not striped and makes up the lining of many of our organs, (involuntary
muscle)
• Cardiac Muscle - striped muscle tissue that is found in the heart (involuntary muscles)
• Skeletal Muscle - striped that is connected to the bones in the skeleton by tendons (voluntary
muscles)

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
• The students will start by tracing their bodies on a large sheet of paper with a buddy. Then I
will ask them to name and place some of their organs (heart, stomach, lungs, etc.), muscles
(biceps, abs, quads, etc.) and general body parts (arms, legs, feet, etc) in their correct spots
using sticky notes. This allows me to pre-assess the students on what they know and what
they still need more information on (KWL body diagram).
• Once the students are done with their tracings we will display them around the classroom and
add new information to them through this unit.
Development/Teaching Approaches
• The teacher will facilitate a discussion about the tracing the students completed and ask them
about what they were able to label and what other knowledge they know about the muscles in
their bodies.
• The teacher will then use a smart exchange power point to deliver the primary content for
this lesson. Throughout the power point the students will be getting assessed on their
knowledge via the interactive sections of the power point using a checklist:
http://express.smarttech.com/?url=http://exchangedownloads.smarttech.com/public/content/e
e/eeec3b92-a897-4778-8060-aca69b9724e8/Muscular%20system%20lesson.notebook#
• While the teacher is going over the power point the students will be filing out a foldable (see
attached) on the different types of muscles in the human body.
• The first slide asks “How many muscles are in the human body?” Teacher will take time for
the students to brain storm / talk to friends and come up with an answer. Then the students
will we come back together as a class and share out their guesses. The teacher will then play
the video: http://kidshealth.org/en/kids/msmovie.html to provide the students with the correct
information.
• Slide #2 is also interactive where the students can click on the circles to uncover what the
different types of muscles are: Voluntary and Involuntary
• On the third slide it talks about the voluntary and involuntary Muscles this slide provides the
students with the definitions of each. The teacher will provide examples of voluntary and
Involuntary Muscles so that the students get a better understanding. Voluntary Muscles are
your arms and legs. Involuntary Muscles are lungs, heart, and other organs within the body.
This would be information that will go in the foldable under the flaps for voluntary and
involuntary.
• Slide #4 is an interactive slide where one or two students can come up and answer the
question.
• Slide #5 is where they find out that the body has special types of muscles: Smooth, Skeletal,
and Cardiac
• Slide #6 gives them the definitions of the special muscle types. This would be the
information that gets written down in their foldable.
• Slide #7 is an interactive slide where the one or three students can come up to the board and
participate.
• Slide #8 is the slide that has the picture of the skeleton the teacher will talk to the students
about the location of all the muscles so that they are prepared for the activity. If you click on
the skeleton it will bring you to the online quiz the students will take as a class.
• Once the power point is complete the students will take the quiz at the end to review the
content gone over in the lesson. The quiz will be completed individually using the iPads
provided by the school.
• After the students have completed the online quiz the teacher will pass out folders to each
table containing pictures of smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscles. The folder will contain
pictures of the heart, stomach, large / small intestines, biceps, triceps, abdomen, and quads.
The students will cut and paste the pictures onto their body tracing from the beginning of
class. The teacher will use a check list to asses the students.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
• The teacher will review the main point from the lesson: Voluntary and Involuntary muscles
and then the special types of muscles: Smooth, Skeletal, and Cardiac.
• The teacher will ask the students what they took away from the lesson and what they found
interesting.
• Next the teacher will lead into the next lesson of the unit by playing the sound of a heart beat
and ask the students if they can guess what they will be learning about next time:

Accommodations/Differentiation:
• J.R. has ADHD this means he has trouble staying focused and that he likes to get up and
move around. By having the interactive power point this is a great way for J.R. to get up and
moving in a productive way. Also having the students fill out the foldable is helpful too
because it keeps his hands busy and also keeps him focused on the power point and the
content being taught.

Materials/Resources:
• Types of Muscles foldable (26: one for each student)
• 2 Scissors (14 per table)
• 7 Folders (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of the stomach (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of the heart (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of the large / small intestines (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of triceps (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of biceps (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of the abdomen (1 per table)
• 7 pictures of quads (1 per table)
• Smart board for the interactive lesson:

the power point: http://kidshealth.org/en/kids/msmovie.html
