CFD Task

External Flow: F1 rear wing design and analysis

This task demonstrates how to do the following:

 Launch ANSYS Workbench

 Create an ANSYS Fluent fluid flow analysis system
 Create the geometry using ANSYS Design Modeler
 Create the computational mesh for the geometry using ANSYS Meshing
 Set up the CFD simulation in ANSYS Fluent, which includes:
o Set material properties and boundary conditions for external flow condition.
o Initiate the calculation with residual plotting
o Calculate a solution using the density based solver
o Visually examined the flow fields using ANSYS Fluent (and ANSYS CFD-Post)

Problem Description

Design a rear wing of an F1 car using ANSYS Design Modeller and analyse the performance of the wing
with ANSYS Fluent CFD package. The design can be in 2-D or 3-D. According to the 2009 F1 technical
regulations, the wing span and chord length are 710 mm and 350 mm respectively, as shown in Figure
1. Perform a CFD analysis when the car at its maximum speed of 320 km/h and the track temperature
of 37°C. Based on your design, determine the maximum downforce that can be generated from the
rear wing, knowing that the coefficient of lift (CL) can be obtained from the CFD results. Discuss your
findings.

Submission

Your report MUST not exceed 10 pages, including figures and references. The structure of the report
should be:

 Introduction: include some theories in this section.

 Modelling stage: explain your design

 Fluent CFD: discuss each of the step taken to complete the calculation.
 Results and Discussion: discuss your findings, is the downforce enough and other
parameters that may affect the wing performance.
 Conclusion

Note:

 ZERO marks will be given if any of the two or more groups found cheating or similar
design/discussions.
 10 marks will be deducted for late submission.
 Make sure you specify the role of each of your team member (work contribution) at the first
page of your report. ZERO marks will be given if you have no contribution to your group.
