I had just turned 19. I went to a frat party and I was
drinking too much. I started dancing and making out
with a stranger. He quickly became violent. When I
tried to leave, he followed me upstairs and dragged
me into a side room. He slammed me against the
wall, pulled my leggings down and my shirt up. He
held me against the wall with his forearm pressing
down on my neck. I completely froze. My screams
echoed in my head but I couldn’t make any sound. He
then pushed me onto the couch and climbed on top of
me. I turned my face into the couch cushions so that I
didn’t have to watch. I gave up. I let him spread my

legs. He raped me on the couch….

The most common date rape drugs- which are also
called “club drugs”-are Rohypnol (roofies),
Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB), and
Ketamine (special K). These drugs come in many
different forms, such as liquids, powders, and pills.
These drugs can affect you very quickly and cause
victims to become weak, confused, and even pass
out. You may not remember what happened while
you were drugged. Protect yourself by not
accepting drinks from others, watching your drink;
sharing drinks, and having a non-drinking friend
make sure that nothing goes wrong. If you ever
suspect that you might have been exposed to a
date rape drug or have been sexually assaulted,
call 911 or contact the National Sexual Assault
Hotline (1-800-656-HOPE).

 How To Prevent Potential Dating Violence &
How To Intervene
 Talk to Someone: some people may doubt
whether they are in a violent dating situation or
not, and can become confused by their
relationship. Confiding in a close family member
or friend can help or using Violence Hotlines to
determine possible violence in the relationship.
 Educate Yourself: Knowing the red flags and
signs of dating violence makes it easier to avoid.
Potential red flags of violent behavior consist of:
controlling behavior, sudden mood swings/
changes, and/or threats of violence.
 Double Date: Double or group date with people
you know in order to avoid being alone with a
stranger or someone you do not know. This
might offer some safety and prevent date rape
(since this often occurs early on during a dating
relationship).
 Be Aware of Alcohol & Drugs: Be aware of how
much you are drinking (do NOT get too drunk!)
and make sure not to take drinks from people you
do not know or if you did not see them make it.
 Be Prepared: If you feel uncomfortable, you
should leave the situation as soon as possible. If
you cannot leave at that moment, grab someone
else’s attention that may be able to help you.
Always be prepared to leave an uncomfortable
situation and have the resources you might need
in order to do so (money for a cab; charged cell
phone; etc.).

It seemed to last forever.
Afterward, he put my clothes
back on and took me back to the
basement where the party was.
He told me to come home with
him and I was resistant, so he
tried to drug my drink. But I saw
him drop something in the cup
and panicked. I ran out and
walked home alone. I took a
shower and there was blood
streaming down my legs. I had
bruising and everything hurt.
I told no one. Instead, I numbed
myself by getting sucked into an
eating disorder. I’d had
problems with food and body
image for a long time. Starving
myself buried all the pain and
shame and dirtiness and fear.
After a year, my eating disorder
became life threatening. Now, I
‘ve been in treatment for six
months. I’ve only just begun
talking about what happened to
me.
