Signal Phrases
-A signal phrase is used to signal that a piece of directly quoted evidence is coming.
Examples:
The text/passage/story/article says.
According to title of article OR author's name),
According to the text/passage/story/article.
When the author wrote.
For instance.

The reader learned that _ because.
The photo/graphic/header shows/said..
‘An example of this.
Furthermore, the author stated.

Explanation Sentences
-The explanation sentence comes after the signal phrase and directly quoted evidence. Itis
used to explain the evidence,
In other words.
This/That is why..
The important thing about this/that is.
The author uses this because.
This is giving the reader the idea of/about.
This proves/shows that.
This connects to.
Now the reader understands.
This makes the reader realize.
What this shows is.
Asa result of.
Based on this evidence,
This shows.
Transitional Phrases
-Transitional phrases are used to transition into a new thought, sentence, or paragraph.
