Performance Task Is It Going to be Massive Destruction?

Title
Grade 6th
Designer Shaye Price
Performance Task Students will be able to identify factual information about elements of a
Annotation volcano while working in a group setting. They will be able to demonstrate
how the volcano erupts and where the volcanoes lay compared to a map of
the Earth.

Subject Earth Science

Approximate Two class periods of 75 minutes
Duration of
Performance Task
Focus Standards S6E5. Students will investigate the scientific view of how the earth’s surface
is formed.
e. Recognize that lithospheric plates constantly move and cause major
geological events
on the earth’s surface.
f. Explain the effects of physical processes (plate tectonics, erosion,
deposition, volcanic eruption, gravity) on geological features including
oceans (composition, currents, and tides).
Complementary S6CS9. Students will investigate the features of the process of scientific
Standards inquiry.
S6CS1. Students will explore the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness,
and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to
understand how the world works.

National Standards ISTE 4: Innovative Designer

Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and
solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.
ISTE 6: Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a
variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital
media appropriate to their goals.
Description and Prior to this lesson, students should be comfortable working in groups, know
Teacher Directions how to use pre-selected Web sites for research, and be able to create an
animation to show how volcanoes erupt based upon the different types of
volcanoes. As the teacher, you will need to have basic knowledge about how
to use chromebooks, and be able to help the students when they need
assistance in using Powtoon.
The teacher will start the lesson by showing students a diagram of a volcano,
such as Composite Volcano. The teacher will explain to students that for the
next two days, they will work in groups to learn more about specific
volcanoes and the differences in their eruptions.

Arrange students into groups of three or four, and assign each group a
volcano to research. The students will be given appropriate websites in order
to do their research on their part of the volcano.

Then, guide students through the following steps:

Have each group choose a "Techie," a "Notetaker," and a "Timekeeper." The

Techie will do the computer work, including typing and controlling the
mouse. The Notetaker will record research results on index cards. The
Timekeeper will watch the classroom clock and keep the group on task and
on time.
Have students log on to the Internet. Tell the Timekeeper to watch the clock.
Each group has exactly 30 minutes to complete its research.
Tell students to go to the two Web sites below to learn about their assigned
volcano. Have each student write down on index cards in their own words
five facts about their assigned volcano. Students should use one index card
per Web site, and write the site's URL at the top of the card. Remind
students to write their names at the top each index card as well.
Have students in each group turn in their index cards to be checked. When
the facts on the cards are accurate and fairly complete, groups can create
their animation.
Provide groups with the following instructions:
Go to Powtoon and ask the Timekeeper watch the clock. The group has 45
minutes to create its animation.
The students will work together at this time to create their own animation of
their volcano while imputing the information they found as well.

The next class each group will present their volcanoes to the class and
demonstrate their animations so each volcanic eruption will be represented
and understood.
Title of Rubric Is It Going to be Massive Destruction?
Rubric Description The rubric is designed to show the students what they need to complete on
their animations, and have for their content of their volcanoes.
The second rubric is designed to show the students what the teacher is
expecting for their oral presentation.

These students gave their oral presentation today in Mrs. Floyd’s class. Her
feedback was as follows
- Students did a great job with animation project received a 4 on

the content into their own words so they received a 1 on their

were struggling because of the group activity. Each group also had lower,

Each had to share the workload with having different jobs within the project.
