Second Examination Set A
Thursday, November 10, 2016
1. A BOD test is run using 25 mL of treated wastewater mixed with 275 mL of dilution water. The initial DO
of the mix is 9.5 mg/L. After 5 days, the DO is 4.2 mg/L. After a long period of time, the DO is 2.2 mg/L,
and it no longer seems to be dropping.
(a) What is the five-day BOD of the wastewater? Report the correct units.
(b) What does BOD measure and why do we regulate the BOD of wastewater discharges into the
environment?
(c) Estimate the ultimate carbonaceous BOD.
(d) From the given data, estimate the first-order decay rate coefficient (kd) for BOD degradation.

2. A confined aquifer 10 m thick has two monitoring wells spaced 400 m apart along the direction of
groundwater flow. The difference in water levels in the wells is 1.1 m (the difference in piezometric head).
The hydraulic conductivity is 2 x 105 m/s. Estimate the specific discharge or the Darcy velocity in m/day.

3. What are three significant water quality parameters for municipal wastewater a.k.a. sewage? For each
parameter of concern suggest a unit operation or process for its removal/amelioration.

4. Suggest/sketch a process flow diagram (PFD) for a drinking water treatment plant that uses surface water
from a river for its source water. Assume that the only contaminant of concern is turbidity.
Fall 2016 ENV 3001 S. Laha

5. A chemical analysis of a surface water yields the following data in mg/L as the ion:

Ion Concentration, mg/L

2+
Ca 100
2+
Mg 100
+
Na 100
+
K 100
Cl 50
2
SO4 50
HCO3 50
pH 7.5

(a) Determine the alkalinity (Alk) of the water in mg/L as CaCO3.

(b) Determine the total hardness (TH) of the water in mg/L as CaCO 3.
(c) What is the non-carbonate hardness (NCH) of the water in mg/L as CaCO3?
(d) What is the total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration in mg/L?
(e) Is the analysis complete? In other words, is the electroneutrality condition met?

6. A horizontal flow rectangular primary clarifier for a domestic wastewater treatment plant is to be
3 3 2
designed to settle 5000 m /day of wastewater using an overflow rate (v0) of 32 m /m -day. The tank is to
be 4 m deep and 4.0 m wide.
(a) How long should the settling tank be?
(b) What detention time (in hours) would it have?
(c) Given a particle with settling velocity (vs) 8 x 105 m/s, determine the removal efficiency (%) of this
particle in the settling tank. Hint: A particle is completely removed if its settling velocity v s >v0.
However, if vs < v0, removal efficiency for a horizontal flow clarifier = (vs/v0)100%

1. A BOD test is run using 10 mL of raw untreated wastewater mixed with 290 mL of dilution water. The
initial DO of the mix is 9.9 mg/L. After 5 days, the DO is 4.5 mg/L. After a long period of time, the DO is 2.3
mg/L, and it no longer seems to be dropping.

2. An unconfined aquifer 15 m thick has two monitoring wells spaced 480 m apart along the direction of
groundwater flow. The difference in water table elevations between the two wells is 0.3 m. The hydraulic
conductivity is 6 x 105 m/s. Estimate the specific discharge or the Darcy velocity in m/day.

3. What are three significant parameters of concern for municipal wastewater a.k.a. sewage? For each
parameter of concern suggest a unit operation or process to treat it.

4. Suggest/sketch a process flow diagram (PFD) for a drinking water treatment plant that uses groundwater
for its source water. Assume that the only problem with the groundwater is hardness.
