8. What is the Amazon ?

For people who have never been to Brazil, the Amazon is a massive jungle full of
anacondas, howler monkeys and lost Indian trribes. To the Brazilian government, and to the
Brazilian people, it is more than that. In Amazonas state, the largest state in the north of Brazil,
Manaus city is home to 1.8 million people, nearly half the state’s 3.4 million population, according
