Essay – Option B

Surveillance practices are being increasingly used by governments and businesses. While
many agree that the use of surveillance practices benefits both society and businesses, others
are concerned about the potential for its misuse.

Can the use of surveillance practices by governments and businesses be

justified in today’s society?

You are working towards writing a four paragraph argumentative essay on whether the use
of surveillance is justified. Include statistics and examples from academic sources to help
support your argument.

Assignment 1 & 2: Essay plan & Body paragraph Value: 15 %

Due: Sunday 22nd May 2016 (Week 5) at 10 pm

Essay plan

Task: Use the template provided to submit an essay plan with a clear thesis statement that
states your position on the topic and outlines the main arguments and supporting ideas,
counter-arguments and rebuttal to the counter-arguments in note form and complete
sentences as required.

Organise your ideas logically and include sufficient information to show that you have
understood the question. Your plan should not exceed one double-sided page.
Body paragraph

Undergraduates:
Length: 250 words (+/- 10%)
References: A minimum of two academic sources must be used.

Postgraduates:
Length: 300 words (+/- 10%)
References: A minimum of three academic sources must be used.

Task: Write one clearly structured and logically developed body paragraph that states your
argument, counter-argument and rebuttal. Use statistics and examples from academic sources
as support. Include a reference list of the sources used.

Assignment 3: Final essay Value: 25%

Due: Tuesday 21st June 2016 (Week 9) at 10pm

Undergraduates:

Length: 1000 words (+/- 10%)

References: A minimum of two additional academic references to those used in the body
paragraph must be used. The final essay will therefore need a minimum of four sources.

Postgraduates:

Length: 1200 words (+/-10%)

References: A minimum of three additional academic references to those used in the body
paragraph must be used. The final essay will therefore need a minimum of six sources.

Task: Write a four paragraph argumentative essay on whether the use of surveillance is
justified. Include statistics and examples from a variety of academic sources as support. You
are expected to respond to teacher feedback received on the essay plan and body paragraph in
developing your final essay.

NB: Penalties for late submissions and plagiarism will apply.

You must retain copies of your sources used for quotes and paraphrasing in your essay for
use by your teachers should they suspect plagiarism.
