Lesson Idea Name: Adding and Subtracting within 20

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.4

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

In this activity there is a visual read of the activity for hearing impaired but there is also a way to use the
audio to read the question aloud for visual impaired students. It also uses the technology to better engage
and inform students through interactive activities.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
To introduce the lesson, I will tell the students that they are going to use their smart brains to show me what
they have learned in the past on this lesson. I will also share with them that this is a very fun activity that they
will be using their iPad or tablets to answer and they even get to create their own name so only they know
who they are on the big screen!

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity the student will answer multiple questions about adding and subtracting within the
number 20. The lesson will last around 15-20 minutes. The teacher will be directing the activity but it is
completely based around the students in your classrooms pace. The activity will only allow the class to move

forward when all students have answered which holds the students accountable while also moving at the
pace of them .
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Working sample present
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes, I will display the correct answers after discussing the mistakes the students may have made rather than
just displaying the correct answer and moving forward with no information for the student to determine why
they made the mistake and what they can correct for next time.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity depending on the progress of the students we will review the information in the activity
with a group math lesson. We will do an activity where each students will work in pairs to complete the
activity where they will have a video that they review from the information taught in the activity and then
they will be asked to complete an activity that the teacher has created on nearpod where they are able to
interact with the material presented in the assessment activity in this lesson.

How will the data be used?

During the activity the information that will be selected is where the students currently are with addition and
subtraction within 20. Also, it will determine the next steps that I as the teacher will have to take to move
forward with addition or to teach the lessons that the socrative assessment determines. The information
collected will only be shared with the teacher and the parents when discussing things that they may use to
help support learning at home and some of the activities that they may try with the students to help them
progress. The information from each student will be anonymous because each student will pick a stage name
for their profile in the game such as “pinkhorse3” so if the information from the assessment shows up on the
screen the students will not see the real names of the students that answered correctly or incorrectly in the
lesson. In the future this information can be used to differentiate lessons by splitting the students into groups
based on their ability or changing the numbers of the problems to better support each student.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

In the lesson I hope to learn how to incorporate these types of engaging lessons into my future classrooms as
well as differentiating between each student using the assessment from socrative. I hope that this lesson
helps me learn the levels that each student is on and also how to move forward or review the activities from
this assessment. I hope the students will either use this assessment as a review for their prior learning or use
these questions to move forward in their learning. I hope they will see that the information will help them
rather than give up and move forward without a base understanding of the subject.
Reflective Practice:
I feel as though the lesson with help the students to learn and grow with the information presented in the
assessment. It will help the students see where they are in their learning as well as helping me as the teacher

to determine the next steps needed to move the students forward. The nearpod activity will help the
students engage themselves in their math learning because in the activity they are able to read the questions
and draw and interact with the program. This is also very important in helping the student grow because
activities that engage the student will be more useful to them in the future.
