Subject Math

Grade Level 2nd

Type of Online Class Asynchronous

Learning Objective 2.22 The student will demonstrate an understanding of
Content

equality by recognizing that the symbol = in an equation

indicates equivalent quantities and the symbol ≠ indicates that
quantities are not equivalent.
Online Activity For this online activity, before assigning it I would lead them to
one of the introduction videos on the PHET site and review
balance and equality in terms of scales via recorded videos
since this class is asynchronous.

The students will be free to explore the simulation at their own

pace on their time, and I will attach an online document to be
filled out while working with the simulation, asking them to
draw some sketches of what their scales looked like and
represent the figures with weights attached to them.

I’d also include an activity that lets the student explore some
greater than and less than and seeing if they understand the
concept of the scale leaning one way for the heavier/lighter
side. It will be open ended and let the student explore further
the options.

Next, I’ll have the students complete a simulation using the

“mystery items” in the inventory and have them represent the
unknown weights with any possibilities of weights that would
satisfy =,>, or <.

At the end of the worksheet, I would include a reflection open

space to allow the student to discuss what they learned and
have them connect to what some real-world applications to
this activity could be.

To wrap the activity up, the students will then asynchronously

Pedagogy

respond to a discussion board post or two on their experiences

and the scales they made, how balance worked out.
