Central Idea: Abraham Lincoln fought for freedom by signing the Emancipation
Proclamation.

Abraham Lincoln Life

Abraham Lincoln wanted to change the world. He thought he could do this by using his
presidential power. Abraham Lincoln did several changes that affected today’s society. But first,
I will present his personal background and his family. And continue on with his achievements of
how he ended slavery, one of his quotes and how his life came to an end.

Abraham Lincoln was the son of Nancy Hanks Lincoln and Thomas Lincoln. He was the
second child to be born out of the three. His father later remarried to Sarah Bush Johnston who
became Lincoln’s stepmother. Lincoln drew close to his stepmother rather than his father. His
father was a farmer in Kentucky where they once lived.

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. As he got
older, he married Mary Todd Lincoln and had four children. Which where Robert Todd, Edward
(Eddie) Baker Lincoln, William (Willie) Wallace Lincoln, Thomas (Tad) Lincoln. Most of his
children died at a very young age except for Robert.

Abraham Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States. He fought for the
people who were slaves by signing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. It was important
because it granted freedom to to people who were enslaved. He did not​ want the nation to split
apart and having slavery​ ​was a big dilemma. The Southern states needed slaves​ ​to work on
their big farms and the people in the North were against slavery.

On April 12 of 1861, the American Civil War started. The Southern states broke away
from the North and formed their own army. It came to be the bloodiest war in American history.
During the war, the Northerners won many battles the most famous one was at Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania. On January 1st 1863, Lincoln declared​ ​that all slaves in America were free.
Many people say that Lincoln was America’s most important president. He ended slavery​ ​and
helped America stay one country.On April 9th 1865 the civil war ended.

Lincoln opposed slavery. One of the many quotes that he used was, “ A house divided
against it cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and
half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved- I do not expect the house to fall - but I do
expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.”

On April 14 of 1865, Lincoln was shot on the head while he attended a theatre
performance in Washington. The following day, he died from his wounds. It was know that he
was killed by a famous actor John Wilkes Booth.
