UNIT II
4 a) Give the constructional features of D.C machines (6M)
b) A 4 pole DC machine has 51 slots and each slot contains 20 conductors. The machine
has a useful flux of 0.007wb and runs at 1500 rpm. Find the induced emf, if the
machine is wave wound and lap wound? (6M)
(OR)
5 a) Define commutation? Explain how to improve commutation by
i) high resistance ii) interpoles. (6M)
b) Two shunt wound d.c generators are connected in parallel to supply aload of 5000A.
Each machine has armature resistance of 0.03 ohms and a field resistance of 60 ohms,
but the E.M.F of one machine is 600V and that of other is 640V. What power does the
machines supply? (6M)
UNIT III
6 a) what are the factors controlling the motor speed, discuss the various speed control
methods used for DC series motors? (6M)
b) A DC series motor rated at 230V; 1000 rpm; 80A. The series field resistance is 0.1
ohms and armature resistance is 0.14 ohms. If the flux at the armature current of 20 A
is 0.4 times of that under rated condition. Calculate the speed at this reduced armature
current of 20 A. (6M)
(OR)
7 a) Derive Torque equation of DC motor? (4M)
b) The armature winding of a 200V, 4-pole series motor is lap-connected. There are 280
slots and each slot has 4 conductors. The current is 45A and the flux per pole is
18mWb. The field resistance is 0.3 ohms: the armature resistance is 0.5 ohms and iron
and friction losses total is 800W. The pulley diameter is 0.41m. Find the pull in
newton at the rim of the pulley. (8M)
UNIT IV
8 a) explain the Swinburne’s test with neat sketch and list out its advantages and
disadvantages? (6M)
b) A 10KW 250v DC shunt motor draws a line current of 6A while running at no load
speed of 1200 rpm from 250V dc supply. It has an armature resistance of 0.5 ohms and
field resistance of 125 ohms. Estimate the efficiency of the motor when delivering
rated load. (6M)
(OR)
9 a) Enumerate the various losses in a dc machine, Which of these loses are constant.
Derive the expressions for the efficiency of a dc generator and dc motor. (6M)
b) Hopkinson’s test on two shunt machines gave the following results for full load: (6M)
Line voltage 250V
Line current excluding field current 50A
Motor armature current 380A
Field currents 5A and 4.2A
Calculate the efficiency of the each machine. The armature resistance of each machine
is 0.02Ω.
