THIRD EYE

ABSTRACT:
In the current scenario the visually challenged people face difficulties in
moving from one place to another. The only way for them is to seek the help
of the other persons, cane or a dog. In order to address this problem the
project “THIRD EYE” is proposed. The project “THIRD EYE” is an
ultrasonic mobility aid for visually challenged people, which enables more
informed, confident and efficient pedestrian travel. The third eye is
Obstacles in the path are detected by the ultrasonic sensors and
communicated via gentle vibrations. Added the approximate distance of the
obstacle will be communicated via voice through earphones. The device is
intended as a secondary mobility device to complement the traditional long
cane or guide dog.

KEYWORDS: Ultrasonic module, microcontroller, codec IC, speaker, coil

motor vibrators.
OBJECTIVE:
The main objective of the project is to guide visually challenged
persons via vibrations and approximate distance is communicated to them
through the earphones.

METHODOLOGY:

The Ultrasonic waves gets reflected back, when a visually challenged person
encounters an obstacle in his path, the reflected signal is captured by the
receiver and its given to the microcontroller for distance calculation via
interfacing circuits. Based on the distance calculated the vibrators are made
to vibrate at different intensity.
Mean while the calculated distance which is in digital form is fed
to a vocoder IC which in turn produces a voice and is communicated to the
visually challenged via earphones

WORK PLAN:

In the project the ultrasonic module has a transmitter and receiver

unit, which is placed in the machine. The transmitter unit transmits the
ultrasound signal produced through an oscillator circuit of 40 KHz.
The ultrasonic transmitter is consists of two inverted buffer, which is
connected in parallel. Depending on the frequency the buffer on and off time
is varied. Depending on this variation ultrasonic wave is generated and
transmitted.
Then the ultrasonic wave hits the nearest target (obstacle) and reflects
from the target. The ultrasonic receiver will receive the reflected wave from
the target. Depending upon the distance of the object, the received wave
time is varied. Then the received signal is given to amplifier unit in order to
amplify the received signal. The amplified signal is in the form of AC. So
the signal is given to signal conditioning unit which consists of precision
rectifier and comparator.
Here the microcontroller is the flash type Reprogrammable
microcontroller in which distance formula already programmed in
Microcontroller. Then the signal from SCU is fed to microcontroller where
the processing takes place.
A part of output of the controller is given to the vibrator and the other part
is given to the Codec IC. The input to the codec IC is digital and output is
analog, which inturn plays the audio output in the ear phone.
