1. What is pozzolanic reaction? What is meant by activation of granulated blast furnace slag
(gbfs)? Three cements (I) OPC 43 grade (ii) a cement prepared by inter-grinding OPC clinker with
20 % fly ash and a Blain’s fineness of 400 m2/kg, and, (iii) a cement prepared by inter-grinding
OPC clinker with 40 % gbfs and a Blain’s fineness of 400 m2/kg are available to you. Compare
their setting characteristics, 3,7, 28 days and 3 years strength (relative comparison, absolute values
are not required) and long term durability. What would be the likely components in their
microstructure after six years if all are adequately cured, give a comparison? What would the
implication of Justify your answer in all cases. 10
2. Calculate the volume of unhydrated cement, volume of solid product of gel, gel porosity
and capillary porosity for cement pastes prepared with OPC and water-cement ratios of 0.25,
0.45 and 0.6 at the age of 10 years when adequately cured. Hence, explain the statement
“strength and durability of concrete decreases with water cement ratio” 7
3. What is the significance of fineness modulus? Justify your answer with relevant mathematical
basis. 3

1. Consider a binary mixture of two geometrically similar aggregate of densities of solid 2.6
and 2.7 gm/cc respectively with their respective bulk densities being 1.6 and 1.8 gm/cc.
Obtain expressions for void ratio representing a hypothetical mixture relating the volume
fractions of aggregates when the aggregates can be mixed together without one of the
aggregate altering the structure of the other. Calculate the minimum void ratio and the
corresponding optimal proportion. Hence explain the importance of grading in concrete system.

3. Calculate the capillary porosity, gel porosity and total porosity of a cement +silica fume +
water paste, at the age of 7 days when degree of cement hydration is 50%. The silica fume is
inert at that state and is finer than the cement particle. The w/c ratio is 0.3 and silica fume is
15% by mass of cement and its specific gravity is 2.25. 6
