FM10004 - NV Series – RF Power Module Upgrade
Field Modification
1 INTRODUCTION
This document provides instructions to upgrade an NV series RF power module by
performing two factory modifications.

1.1 Reason For Modification

This modification increases reliability by removing RF interference on the module’s fan speed
sample lines, thus reducing the number of false fan failure alarms.

1.2 Equipment Affected

This procedure applies to NV series FM transmitters that contain NAA56/01 RF Power
Modules manufactured prior to November, 2009.

There are two modifications described in this procedure.

1. Adding LA52 clip-on ferrites (factory implemented March, 2009)

2. Adding CT51 capacitor (factory implemented October, 2009)

Not all RF power modules require both modifications. On the NAA56/01 RF Power Module,
check for the presence of white labels, which indicate factory modifications or DWAs
(Deviation/Waiver Authorizations). These labels should be near the silver “Nautel Part
Number/Serial Number” label.

If the RF power module has a label that reads DWA09-054, the LA52 clip-on ferrites have
already been added to the module. Ignore paragraph 3.1 of the Modifications procedure.

If the RF power module has a label that reads DWA09-209, the CT51 capacitor has already
been added to the module. Ignore paragraph 3.2 of the Modifications procedure.

If both labels are present, this upgrade procedure is not required.

1.3 Responsibility for Implementation of Procedure

Only qualified station engineering personnel who are familiar with the NV series FM
transmitters should perform this procedure.

1.4 Scheduling
Implement this procedure at the convenience of station maintenance personnel and station
broadcast schedule. The transmitter may continue to operate ‘on-air’ at a reduced power
level by disabling and removing one RF power module at a time.

1.5 Manpower Requirements

This modification will require 15 minutes per power module to complete.

1.6 Special Tools/Test Equipment
The following test equipment is required:

• Standard technician hand tools and soldering tools

• Low wattage, fine-tip soldering pencil, with small or fine diameter solder
• 13 mm socket wrench (to remove RF power module M8 shipping hardware, if
necessary)
• Magnifying glass with light (recommended, but not required)

1.7 Materials Required

The parts required for these modifications are contained in the provided field modification kit
(Nautel Part # 206-5132, see Table 1).

1.8 Identification of Modified Assemblies

Use a permanent marker or a label to identify ‘FM10004 (DWA09-054)’ and/or FM10004
(DWA09-209)’ next to the serial number sticker on the complete power module (NAA56/01)
assembly. This serves as a current configuration notice to future engineers or maintenance
personnel.

1.9 Publications Affected

Mark up electrical schematics SD-22 [NAA56 RF Power Module (Sheet 2 of 2)] and SD-24
[NAPI104 Power Module Interface PWB (Sheet 1 of 3)] of the NV Troubleshooting Manual.
See the attached drawings as examples.

2 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
Verify that the transmitter is operating at licensed power without any faults prior to performing
any modifications.

3 MODIFICATIONS

(a) Remove the securing screws at the top and bottom of all RF power modules.

(b) If you have not removed the two M8 shipping bolts that secure the rear of each RF power
module, turn off the transmitter, lock out (disable) the ac power, and remove them using a
13 mm socket wrench. They are located in two straight lines above and below the power
supply distribution PWB (see Figure 1 as an example). These bolts do not need to be re-
installed.

Figure 1 – Shipping bolt location (NV5 transmitter shown)

(c) Disable RF power module # 1 by toggling its front panel rocker switch to the down
position. The LED near the switch should change to solid red, indicating the module is
safe to remove.

(d) Pull the RF power module straight out from the transmitter and place it on a suitable work
surface with the side containing the rocker switch and LED facing upwards (right-hand
side when viewing the front of the module with the fans down).

(e) Verify which DWA labels, if any, are present on the module cover. If DWA09-054 has
already been incorporated, ignore steps (f) and (h) and paragraph 3.1. The side cover
can remain on to incorporate DWA09-209.

(f) If DWA09-054 has not been incorporated, remove and retain the 14 sets of M4 hardware
(screws and beveled star washers) securing the right hand side cover.

(g) Perform the applicable modification procedures in paragraphs 3.1 (incorporates

DWA09-054) and 3.2 (incorporates DWA09-209).

(h) If the side cover was removed in step (f), re-install it using retained hardware.

(i) Insert the RF power module in the transmitter. Re-install the two front panel mounting
screws. Enable the RF power module by setting the front panel rocker switch to the up
position. Press RESET on the front panel AUI to return the module to operation.

(j) Repeat paragraph 3 and applicable paragraphs 3.1 (see page 4) and/or 3.2 (see page 5)
for all remaining RF power modules. When all RF power modules have been modified,
the procedure is complete.

3.1 Adding LA52 Clip-On Ferrites (RF Chokes)

(a) See Figure 2. Along the bottom of the RF power module, locate the six cooling fans and
their respective power/tachometer wires. Install an LA52 clip-on ferrite on each fan’s wire
bundle. Ensure all wires are inside the ferrite core and they are not pinched.

Figure 2 – LA52 clip-on ferrite and tyrap locations

(b) Securely place an HT29 tyrap opposite the fan connector side of the ferrite to prevent it
from slipping back on the wires (see Figure 2).

(c) Identify each completed RF power module on the upper front panel with a permanent
marker (or label) that reads “FM10004 (DWA09-054) Installed” and the date.

3.2 Adding CT51 Capacitor

(a) Rotate the RF power module so that the rear panel edge card connector is facing you
(i.e., the RF output connector is on the right). Locate the four capacitor mounting points
on the left-hand side of the card edge (see Figure 3). Pre-tin each mounting point.

Figure 3 – CT51 Capacitor mounting points

(b) Carefully position the CT51 capacitor (not polarity sensitive) over the four mounting holes
and solder in place by quickly tacking solder to each mounting point. This will prevent
heat damage to the capacitor. Using indelible ink, mark “C144” near the capacitor.

Figure 4 – CT51 Capacitor installation

(c) Identify each completed RF power module on the upper front panel with a permanent
marker (or label) that reads “FM10004 (DWA09-209) Installed” and the date.
