THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the Introduction, Statement of the

Problem, Significance of the Study, Scope and Delimitation, and

Definition of Terms.

Introduction

The word culinary is defined as relating to a kitchen or to

cookery. While art is described as human effort to imitate

supplement, alter, or counteract the word of nature. Put these

two (2) words together and you start to see that the culinary

arts really involves creating something unique, beautiful, and

something that is credible. When you think about what is culinary

arts, you should think of the things you love to eat.

There are some foods that patients usually eats and it

includes soups, certain fruits like bananas, apple, orange, and

avocado. But the mostly food of a sick person is the porridge.

They also drink hot beverages like hot tea and milk. Also, the

berries are good to them.

Herbal medicine is the study or use of medicinal herbs to

prevent and treat diseases and ailments or to promote health and

healing. It is also a drug or preparation made from a plant or

plants and used for any of such purposes.

Furthermore, there are herbal medicines found in the

Philippines. From the legal basis; Republic Act 8423:

“Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act” an act creating the

Philippine Institute of traditional and Alternative Health Care

(PITAHC) to accelerate the development of traditional and

alternative health care in the Philippines, herbal medicines

includes the Ulasimang Bato (Peperonica Pellucida), Bayabas

(Psidium Guajava), Lagundi (Vitex Negundo), Bawang (Allium

Sativum), Yerba (Herba) Buena (Mentha Cordifella), Sambong

(Blumea Balsamifera), Akapulko (Cassia Alata), Niyong-niyogan

(Quisqualis Indica), Tsaang-gubat (Carmona Reusa), Ampalaya

(Mamordica Charantia), Luyang Dilaw (Zingiger officinale),

Tanglad (Andropogon citratus DC), Sabila (Aloe barbadenis miller

liquid) and lastly the Cannabis or the well-known “Mari Juana”.

In fact, we made a food that contains an ingredient of

herbal medicine which is the Cannabis and we named it as “Space

Cake Brownies”. It can cure many illnesses but bare in mind that

Cannabis still has its bad sides or effects in our body. So you

better know the limitation of usage of it.

To let them know the good and bad effects of herbal medicine

to their health and its advantage and disadvantage of it, the

researchers conducted this study or documentary concerning the

evaluation and description of herbal medicines in the

Philippines, specifically in Tarlac.

Statement of the Problem

 This documentary sought to evaluate the medicinal herbs

around Tarlac.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following:

1. How can herbal medicine describe as of:

1.1 Trend of herbal Production

1.2 Does and Don’t

1.3 Effect to the users

2. What are the laws and regulations governing herbal industry?

How they are being implemented and followed?

3. What are the processes involved in raising herbs?

4. What are the problems being investigated to upgrade the herbal

medicine industry and regulate it’s marketing?

Significance of the Study

This documentary can provides awareness and information

concerning our colleagues in Tarlac. The findings of the study

are helpful to the following:

To those people who always taking some processed medicine or

syrup, we just want to remind them that herbal medicine is

effectively than that.

 To the entrepreneurs who are planning to be Med.Tech someday

it is good for them to prepare this or legalized in all hospital

and also they can endorse it for those people who can’t admit in

hospital or if they don’t have enough money.

To the community and consumers, this study is all about

herbal medicine that can improve your body, take note herbal

medicine is nice than syrup or tablet because this is not still

processed, those vitamins from some leaves was still fresh, no

extra vitamins added.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is mainly concentrated on herbal medicine at

Philippines, Tarlac. As an evaluations, this study is to know all

the herbal medicine around Tarlac. And the strategic areas.

Focusing on Herbal Plants Recommended by the Philippine’s

Department of Health (DOH); Sambong, Akapulko, Ampalaya, Bawang,

Bayabas (leaves), Lagundi, Niyog-niyogan, Tsaang gubat, Pansit

pansitan, Yerba Buena, Malunggay, Tawa-tawa, Banaba and even

Marijuana industry: These are some of the herbal plants that

many person can used.

For those people who searching for herbal medicine, it has a

good impact in our body you must use herbal plant instead of

processed medicine (syrup). In the other hand you need to know

your limitations in using those herbals we can get a lot of

benefits in herbals but also it has a bad sides if you don’t know

how to use or even take it.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are hereby defined in the circumstances

of their usage in this study:

Alter- change or cause to change in character or composition,

typically in a comparatively small but significant way.

Culinary Arts- culinary means related to cooking, are the arts of

preparation, cooking and presentation of food, usually in the

form of meals.

Ulasimang Bato ( Peperonia Pellucida)- a weed, with heart-shaped

leaves also known as “pansit pansitan”, grows in shady parts of

the garden and yard. It is effective in fighting arthritis and

gout.

Yerba Buena- a trailing aromatic herb with whitish or lilac

flowers, related to savory. Native to the western US, it has been

used medicinally and as a local tea.

Sambong- used in traditional herbal medicine for the common cold

and as a diuretic. It is also used for infected wounds,

respiratory infections, and stomach, pains in Thai and Chinese

folk medicine.
Akapulko- it is used as both an ornamental and medicinal plant

due to its laxative, purgative and anti-fungal properties.

Tsaang Gubat- is one of the 10 herbs that is endorsed the

Philippine of Health (DOH) as an antispasdomic for

abdominal( stomach) pains.

Niyog-niyogan- is a large climbing, woody shrub that is native in

Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, India,

Myanmar and Malaysia, it grows to about 20 feet in height with

leaves that is rounded at the bottom and pointed at the tips.

Cannabis- a tall plant with a stiff upright stem, divided

serrated leaves, and glandular hairs. It is used to hemp fiber

and as psychotropic drug.

Herbal medicines- is the study or use of medicinal herbs to

prevent and treat diseases and ailments or to promote health and

healing.

Med-tech- a medical technologist (usually medical laboratory

scientist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory

Technologist) is an allied health professional that analyzes and

tests body fluids and tissues.
