Issue: Gender Neutral Bathroom’s
Pro/Con: Pro

1. Opening Statement: We believe that gender neutral bathrooms, (HB2) should be a passed law
throughout the entire country. The U.S. is known to be one the most "prudish" countries in the
west. That is, we attach ourselves to strict and firm social norms about what is socially
acceptable when it comes to sex and gender, specifically compared to our peers in over sea
countries.

i. Argument 1: Acceptance
ii. Argument 1 evidence: As we all know, this class of people do not at ALL look like
their (atypical) sex. Transgender people would be ruthlessly mocked, confronted
and violently attacked (ex.1) if they used the bathroom that matches their
biological sex, because most people would assume they were using the "wrong"
bathroom.
iii. Argument 2: Overall use of a “Bathroom”
iv. Argument 2 evidence: We all use the bathroom. It’s the place you go to do
number one or number two, you wash your hands or whatever then leave. A
bathroom should not be viewed at as some social club where you go to hangout
with your girls or guys and just lollygag; you should be in and out upon
circumstances.
v. Argument 3: Generational Complications
vi. Argument 3 evidence: This generation is open to change we view things more
optimistically, yet it is our parents/the older generation that feels things to
remain how they were brought into it keeping a narrow mind towards bringing
us all together.
d. Powerful concluding statement or summary: In conclusion, we as Americans need to
step to the plate of diversity and realize this is not what it used to be. We have people
that come from all different backgrounds, People need to be more aware of their
surroundings, the older generation will eventually pass yes, but for right now they are
stunting the growth of America.
2. Rebuttal: It is easy to demonize the men in this country for being pigs, lies, and cheats. Yet we
have a hard time thinking about what women themselves put others through. In this game of
equality no one is on top of the other but it is our choice if the country we live in is safe and
sound.
a. The other side might try to argue that: Safety
b. To weaken this position, we will argue that: Now a days we are not safe no matter
where we go, women are getting groped in broad daylight, kids are being shot, the
elderly deal with the ageism, and men are viewed as the scum of the earth. We cannot
possibly think a bathroom is a place where you will be harassed when it is not commonly
a locked area and is usually occupied by more than one person and despite the
occupancy you are in and out. Don’t linger and you’ll be fine.

c. The other side might try to argue that: Cost

d. To weaken this position, we will argue that: Between the cost of: hygiene supplies, a
urnial, a few more stalls, sinks, and extra soap you couldn’t be looking to spend nearly
that little by adding a completely separated bathroom from the two options already
provided. The cost of adding plumbing for a single person bathroom can range from 10-
25 thousand dollars.
e. The other side might try to argue that: Religion
f. To weaken this position, we will argue that: Religion should be the basis of what kinds of
bathrooms we allow in the places we go. Yes, for as long as we can date back bathroom’s
have always been your typical Male and Female but religion preaches acceptance and if
that is now being limited as far as what you accept then that is to be considered un-
christ-like y those around you.
4. Closing statement: Think of the country America can be if we thought the way they did overseas,
imagine the kind of upbringing future generations can potentially have, and think of the fact that
the overall issue is merely “I wouldn’t want to pee next to him or her”. The cost of this would be
done simply by the business owner wherever you may be. Yes it will be “weird” and even
“uncomfortable” but adapting to change is the one thing future generations will be held back
from if we don’t make this change now. The idea is not perfect but it will help mediate some
friction and distress the LGBTQ community may feel whilst out and about. This would not be a
case of special treatment this is merely us being inclusive and wanting to be all kinds of people. A
house divided cannot stand
