l Optical grooming is the configuration of logical wavelength routes, realized by

optical cross connection. This function meets the user's requirement of managing
the services at the optical layer. Products provides flexible optical grooming. When
there are changes in the services, users need only to make configuration accordingly
on the U2000.
l Notes: To ROADM station, we must creating optical cross-Connection, but to
FOADM and OLA station, it is unnecessary.

l Default Edge Port: The optical interface on a board that can serve as the source or
sink port of an optical cross-connection by default.
l Available Edge Port: The board interfaces that is selected from the available edge
ports and can serve as the source or sink port of an optical cross-connection. When
creating an optical cross-connection, select board optical interfaces as the source
and sink ports of the cross-connection based on the network design. In this way, the
route for the cross-connection is created and the optical signal grooming between
the source and sink ports is achieved.
l Selected Edge Port: The board interfaces that is selected from the available edge
ports and can serve as the source or sink port of an optical cross-connection. When
creating an optical cross-connection, select board optical interfaces as the source
and sink ports of the cross-connection based on the network design. In this way, the
route for the cross-connection is created and the optical signal grooming between
the source and sink ports is achieved.

l Prerequisite:
p 1. Fiber connections must be correctly created for the WDM equipment.
p 2.When creating an optical cross-connection of a single station, make sure
that the optical cross-connection of a board in this single station does not
occupy the wavelength that the optical cross-connection of the single station
uses.

l Optical cross-connections are created by creating optical cross-connections by trail or on a

single station.

l Optical power adjust (OPA) function is used during the creation of an optical service.
l For an ROADM site, an OPA adjustment area includes power adjustment points and
power reference points. Each OPA adjustment area can have one or multiple power
adjustment points. The OPA function automatically adjusts the attenuation of each
EVOA inside each OPA adjustment area based on the optical power at the output
and input power reference points.
p Power reference point: the rated input and output power of the optical
amplifier boards and the input power of the OTU at the edges of an OPA
adjustment area on the line.
p Power adjustment point: EVOA-equipped boards inside an OPA adjustment
area, including ROADM boards, M40V, TN12OAU1, TN13OAU1, TN12OBU1,
TN12OBU2, and VAx boards.
p OPA adjustment area: the area made up of power adjustment and reference
points.

l Adjust the attenuation of the VOA on each channel of the M40V at the transmit end
to 5 dB before commissioning.
p 1.In the NE Explorer and select the desired M40V board, choose
Configuration > WDM Interface from the left-hand Function Tree.
p 2.Click the Basic Attributes tab. Set Optical Interface Attenuation Ratio
to 5dB.
p 3.Click Apply. A prompt appears telling you that the operation is successful.
Click Close.

l The rated input power of the OA should be set manually. The system will adjust the
variable attenuation of the ROADM board automatically to make the real input
power of the OA reach the rated power.
p 1.In the NE Explorer, select an OAU board and choose Configuration >
WDM Interface from the Function Tree. Click the Advanced Attributes
tab. The rated optical power value of the receive port is displayed.
p 2.Double-click the Rated Optical Power (dBm) fields of the input and
output ports, and enter values.
p 3.Click Apply.
p 4.Click Query. Confirm that the query results are the same as the values that
are set.

l In the NE Explorer, select the NE and choose Configuration > Optical Cross-Connection
Management from the Function Tree. Click Edge Pert tab in the right-hand pane.
l The Edge Port:
p An edge port is the port through which an NE is connected to other NEs with
fibers.
p Setting an edge port is to set an optical port of an NE as a connection point
between this NE and another NE.
p To create optical cross-connection, the edge ports are needed.

Management from the Function Tree. Click NE-Level Optical Cross-Connection tab in the
right-hand pane ,then click New.
l The Single-Station Optical Cross-Connection:
p Optical cross-connection defines the routes of wavelengths. Through the
creation of single-station optical cross-connection, the routes of inter-board
services are configured.
p Ensure the port to be configured single-station optical cross-connection not
be used by single-board optical cross-connection.
p Optical cross-connection is unidirectional.

l There two ways for Power Adjustment : Automatically or Manually.

l If we want to Power Automatically Adjustment, we can choose the OPA mode as
Auto when creating NE-Level Optical Cross-Connection .
l The Auto option is available for the following types of optical cross-connection trails:
p Pass-through service, such as OA > WSD9 > WSM9 > OA, OA > WSD9 >
RMU9 > OA, OA > WSMD4 > WSMD4 > OA and OA > ROAM > ROAM > OA.
p Added service, such as OTU > WSM9 > OA, OTU > WSMD4 > OA, OTU >
RMU9 > OA, and OTU > ROAM >OA.
p Dropped service, such as OA > WSD9 > OTU, .
l Before this step, the fibers must be firstly connected correctly, both on U2000 and
on the equipment side.

l The U2000 enables you to create, search, view, join, split, and delete WDM trails. In
addition, the U2000 provides the signal flow diagram that visually displays the signal
flow and the transmission media layer route of trails. This facilitates operations and
improves the maintenance efficiency.
l Currently the U2000 provides the following OTN trail modules that comply with ITU-
T G.872:
p Client trail
p ODUk trail: optical channel data unit (ODUk) trail
p OTUk trail: optical channel transport (OTUk) unit trail
p OCh trail: optical channel trail
p OMS trail: optical multiplexing section trail
p OTS trail: optical transmission section trail
p OSC trail: optical supervisory channel (OSC) trail
