Teens using Social Media for Good Deeds

Using social media for good deeds is rare. There’s so much bad publicity these days about aloof digital natives and social media.
Cyber-bullying, inappropriate postings on social networking sites that make people look down on teens. But there are also young
people out there using social media in positive ways—sometimes wonderful, life-changing ways that show you’re never too young
to make a difference. These two people are far from being “fakes and wannabes”! …So, get ready to be inspired!

Hannah Alper motivates people of all ages to identify their passion and take action

If there’s such a thing as a social-media prodigy, Hannah Alper is the perfect portray. Hannah, who is
from Toronto, launched her blog Call Me Hannah when she was just nine years old. Hannah’s passion
for speaking out about important causes started early on with her love for animals, which quickly
spread to concern for threatened habitats and the environment as a whole, her father recalls.
Fast forward four years, and Hannah has not only built a huge following for her blog but gained
influence through public speaking and public appeals. She has 34,000 loyal followers on Twitter, writes for The Huffington Post,
and serves as both a Me to We Motivational Speaker and Free the Children Ambassador. Meanwhile, her advocacy has evolved to
also include anti-bullying efforts and celebrating other young role models, including highly regarded, Malala Yousafzai.
Hannah goes by a lot of profiles, from eco-warrior to “kindraiser.” And if you want to know what “kindraising” is, here it is in
Hannah’s own words: “Kindraising is all about making communities and the world change through kindness. I believe that money is
not the only tool to overcome social issues and that compassion, empathy and kindness play a huge role in reaching that goal.”

Jah’Kiyla Atwaters provides the opportunity for children, who can not afford tuition, to play sports

A few years ago, 12-year-old competitive cheerleader Jah’Kiyla Atwaters of Boynton Beach, Fla.—who is also a model and
actress—was practicing cheerleading routines at a park when she noticed some girls outside the gate
watching. When she encouraged them to try cheering, one of them responded, “My mom died, and my sister
is taking care of us. She doesn’t have the means for me to cheer.” Saddened by the hard facts, Jah’kiyla told
her mom, a strong advocate of getting her hands on the things she believes in, and together they formed
the Jump with Jah’kiyla (JWJ) Foundation to provide children who normally couldn’t afford it, the opportunity
to play sports. They created a charity operated website to encourage donations and to help kids and their
families more likely enjoy the benefits of sports. Jah’kiyla also launched a social media campaign last year
asking kids to create unique posters by posting a wide range of photographs depicting their favourite sport.
Due to her gripping personality and personal commitment to this cause, this young girl has been on the
cover of printed and broadcasted media sources.
The website BlackCelebrityGiving highlighted the JWJ Foundation in 2014, recalling, “The urge to help others and her outgoing

This cartoon conveys the idea that social media is not only distancing people from face-to-face communication, but also
degrading their knowledge and literary skills. Besides, they usually get to the point in which there is no topic for
conversation. The abuse of social media networks can, therefore, lead to an addiction that removes our social life skills.
People who are addicted to social media tend to ignore their friends and family, making them completely aloof and
alienated.

In conclusion, social media has its positive and negative aspects, which is why people should control the time they
spend there.
