1.0 PURPOSE

To describe the procedure for installation of Sacrificial Zinc Ribbon Anode to ensuring its best
result in protecting pipeline under high voltage surges and provide adequate quality assurance /
control of workmanship and inspection at site.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure covers the installation of Zinc Ribbon Anode for protection of pipeline under
high voltage surges related to Permanent Cathodic Protection System as per standard drawing.

3.0 MATERIALS & EQUIPMENTS

 Equipments : Calibrated portable multi meter, Standard Copper- Copper Sulphate

Reference Cell and Tool kit etc.

 Materials : Zinc Ribbon Anode, Epoxy & Hardener, M – seal, PVC pipe / funnel Cables,
Cable lugs, Measuring tape and Tool box, etc.

5.0 PROCEDURE

 Measure 5 m distance from pipeline on the Right of use and excavate the pit up to 1.5 m or
pipeline bottom depth whichever is higher and width / length as requires.

 Install the anode horizontally in excavated pit, if excavated area is dry than water shall be
placed in excavated area for better conductivity, anodes are to be moist before installation.

 The anodes shall be installed horizontally with parallel to the pipeline route as per design
with the top edge of the anode at a minimum depth equal to the bottom level of the pipe
line.

 Anodes shall be installed in 300mmx300mm cross-section trench filled with low resistivity
chemical backfill mixture of Gypsum (75%), Bentonite (20%) and Sodium Sulphate (5%) to
decrease the resistance to earth if required.

 Lay the anode tail cable up to test station & each length of anode shall be terminated
individually into test station.

 Backfill the excavated soil and soil shall be tamped down.

 Measure and record open circuit potential of anode after installation.

 Also measure and record the pipe to soil potential before and after connecting the anode to
the pipeline.

 At any location if rock is found than anode shall be installed at 0.5 m depth in horizontal
configuration, this is to avoid current shielding because of rock, however it should be
ensured that pipeline is protected cathodically.

6.0 PRECAUTIONS

 Install anode carefully.

 If native soil is dry than watering may be done for better conductivity and to reduce the
resistance.

 All Cables are to be appropriately tagged & all the cable connection should be checked for
proper tightening.

7.0 TEST REPORTS

Record and document all inspection results obtained in the standard inspection report formats
attached below.
