Narrandera Public School (NPS) is located in the Riverina Region. The town has a population of 6,
119 and consists of one infant, primary and high school [ CITATION Nar15 \l 3081 ]. The town has a
great communication with the Elders and community of Indigenous people. NPS also provides a
personal and individual approach to learning for all children in partnership with families and
community members (ACARA, 2015). They believe, that it is the quality of their teaching and their
positive personal relationships that have the most significant impact on improving students' learning
(ACARA, 2015).

NPS has a total enrolment of 234 students, with 125 girls and 109 boys. 41% of the students are
Indigenous and majority come from a lower socio-economic status. Only 2% come from a language
background other than English. The school has 12 permanent teachers, with 6 non-teachers
(ACARA,2015).

NPS’s slogan to “Strive to Excel,” supports and directs the teaching and learning across all areas of
academic, arts and recreational activities (Narrandera Public School, 2015). The school has a P&C, a
great learning support team and a local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG). The
learning support team coordinates all learning programs with a strong emphasis on early learning
initiatives, individual instruction, small group instruction and Gifted and Talented programs
(ACARA,2015). The local AECG works closely with the school and contributes highly within the
classrooms. The school has a daily Breakfast Club which opens from 8:30 to 9:15 for the students,
staff and parents/carers. Additionally, NPS was the first school in the Riverina Region to implement
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) initiatives (ACARA, 2015). The PBL programme has become
dominant policy within classrooms as well as a key training resource for the region. The school is
highly involved in softball and football.

Classroom Profile
The Year 6 class consists of nineteen students of which are 10 girls and 9 boys, ranging from
11-13. In regards to background, majority of the class come from a lower socio-economic status and
many are growing in single parenting homes. One student lives with their grandmother, one is cared
by their aunty and 13 students come from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Two
students come from a household of drug abuse. Particular attention is provided towards certain
students to aid in basic numeracy and literacy education. One students in particular is provided with
daily one-on-one numeracy lessons. The class has no allergies; however, the school is a nut-free
environment. One student has speech difficulty, one student has ADHD/ODD and two students have
IM. The class has two high achievers, a girl and a boy.

The class has an Aboriginal Officer working closely with the students with weekly dance rehearsals
for an opening performance for the school concert. However, this consists of only the 13 Indigenous
students. There is also a local Aboriginal volunteer, who assists daily within the classroom.

The classroom teachers use the PBL initiative regularly within the classroom to explicitly teach values
of safety, respect, responsibility and learning and publicly recognise positive behaviours of students
(ACARA, 2015). Also, Year 6 leaders are nurtured as leaders of the future in a fortnightly student-led
School Parliament.
