May — Aug 2016 Final Examination EY205 Environmental Engineering Analysis & Design QUG@) What is the environment to an environmental engineer, Describe the major components (b) © @ (e) Qe @ 0) © @ and subcomponents of the natural environment (4 marks) Explain the definition of an ecosystem? (4 marks) How do the components of an ecosystem interact (explain by sketching)? (4 marks) Describe the environmental policy? (4 marks) Why do we need environmental legislations? (4:marks) A run-off from an agricultural site is drained into a nearby river during the rainy season at ‘an average flow rate of 0.3 m’s". The run-off was found to contain a group of pollutants in its stream, The same group of pollutants is also found in the river that has a flow-rate of 25 m’s", ‘The concentration of the pollutants found drained into the river is $000 mg/L, the pollution caused in the upstream of the river yield to a concentration of 30 mg/L. of the same group of pollutants. The regulatory body of the area has set « maximum limit for the concentration of the group of pollutants to be 70 mg/L. Assuming that complete mixing occurs in the river, analyze to check will the agricultural site be allowed to continue draining their run-off to the river? (@ marks) Considering the high concentration of the group of pollutants contained in the run-off from the agricultural site, as stated in Q2(a); what and how can this phenomenon cause one other type of pollution? (2 marks) If the owner of the agricultural site decides to also introduce a stream of pure water into the river, what would be the minimum flow-rate of pure water required to enable the draining of the run-off from the agricultural site into the river to be legitimate? (4 marks) If water from this site need to be treated for another usage, suggest typical processes to treat such surface water pollution. (6 marks) ‘The exhaust gas produced by a car contains 1.5% by volume of carbon monoxide (CO). What is the concentration of CO in mgm” at 25°C and 1 atm pressure? Given that the molecular weight of CO is 28.0 g/mole. (6 marks) Calculate the settling rate of a dust cloud of density 1500 kgm produced by a sandblasting operation if the particle has the diameter of 17 mm in air at 27 °C using Stoke’s law equation. Given that the density of air is 1.2 kgm’ and its dynamic viscosity at 27 °C is 1.85 x 10° kgm's"; is Stokes’ law applicable? What is the residence time of the particle at 1000 m elevation? (8 marks) Describe the impacts of noise pollution on (i) Human (6 marks) (ii) Animals and Aquatic life (6 marks) If an industrial fan generates a noise level of 65 dB for 10 minutes out of every hour, compute the equivalent continuous level (L4.,) if the background level is 5543. (4 marks) ‘The sound power level of a compressor is 124.5 dB at 1000 Hz. Determine the sound pressure level (SPL) 200 m downwind on a clear summer afternoon if the wind speed is 5 m.s"; the temperature is 20°C, the relative humidity is 50%, and the barometric pressure is 101.325 kPa, At these conditions, the attenuation by air absorption (Asi) is 0.94 dB. ‘The total ground attenuation (A.2) is -2.21 dB, which is reflection increases the noise level. (4 marks) Explain the definition Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)? (5 marks) An EIA is to be conducted for proposal to build a primary school that is predicted to house 1500 students in a matured residential area, The school is to be located next to the access of the residential area from the main road, Identify five environmental impacts that you would identify to be included in the preliminary assessment: Page 2 of 4 May — Aug 2015 Final Examination EY205 Environmental Engineering Analysis & Design (During the construction of the schoo! building.
