Procedure of Analysis

1. Draw curve, and coordinate axes

2. Form moment equation as a function of x.

3. Double integrate moment equation obtained for every x. Find

integration constants using boundary and continuity conditions.

Moment-Area Method
REF: Textbook Chapter 8, 8-4
• A semigraphical method that is useful when computing deflection and its
slope for beam with varying EI values
• Based on two theorems:
1. The change in slope,  between two points on an elastic curve is the
area under the M/EI curve between these points.
2. The vertical distance of the tangent lines of Point A to Point B (on an
elastic curve) measured on the vertical axis of Point A is given by the
product of the area under the M/EI curve between these points and
the centroid of this area.

Theorem 1:
The slope at a point in the real beam is numerically equal to the shear at
the corresponding point in the conjugate beam.

Theorem 2:
The displacement at a point in the real beam is numerically equal to the
moment at the corresponding point in the conjugate beam.

Size: Same length as real beam

Loading: M/EI curve of the real beam due to real loadings

Supports: Consequence of Theorem 1 and 2.
