Required Books:
Excerpts from Raise the Issues, 2nd edition, by Carol Numrich, Longman: New York. (There
is no need to buy the book.)
A book of your own choice. You will divide the book into 9 sections, and read one section
per week.
A thesaurus, Roget’s, for example.
A monolingual English dictionary (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Cobuild
English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary, MacMillan
Dictionary for Advanced Learners, Webster’s Dictionary, etc.)
Requirements:
You will only speak English in Class. Hand in a Percentage English Sheet each week.
You need to attend 80% of the lessons to get the most out of the class.
You will be assigned into groups. Weekly participation in your group is required. This
includes preparing homework in advance. Don’t let your group down. The success of the
group depends on you.
You will keep a weekly reading journal in which you summarize, in your own words, a
section of your book, AND write your opinion, thoughts, inspirations, etc. Please write in
paragraph form and include two sections: The Summary and My Opinion. You can
write this in Writing Journal, in the FirstClass Conference if you wish (see * free
below). Be prepared to give an oral summary of your book each week (without looking!).
March Present a 2-3 minute summary of your Read Raise, Ch. 1 ‘The Internet: A Driving
book to your group. Force for Change’, pp. 1-3 + ex A & C.
Finish Unit 2 ‘When Does Life Begin’: Read pp. 4-5.
Discuss pp. 59-61, Ex A, B, & C. Do ex. A, B, and C (without a dictionary).
P. 62, in your group decide on the rules
you would establish for the handling and
disposition of frozen embryos and discuss
the questions in B. Be prepared to relate
your groups ‘Rules’ to the class.
