1 SCOPE

This specification covers the requirements for outside coated and wrapped pipe (cold-applied
over trench), outside coating and wrapping of welded field joints and fittings and outside coating
and wrapping of pipe sleeves.

2 GENERAL

2.1 The outside coating and wrapping shall be applied:

a. Directly to outside surface of pipe to be protected providing that service temperature of the
line does not exceed 65 ºC.

b. Piping subject to service temperatures above 65ºC shall be installed in sleeves (these
sleeves shall be coated and wrapped as the lines).

2.2 For details of trench excavation, pipe setting out, piping laying, backfilling of trenches and site
clean up see specification STGPS-S2 installation of underground lines.

3 APPLICATION OF COATING AND WRAPPING FOR PIPING SUBJECT TO SERVICE

TEMPERATURE 65ºC AND BELOW

The outside coating and wrapping shall be carried out over trenches or in site fabrication shop.

3.1 The pipe (carbon steel) shall first be cleaned of all grease, mill scale, and dirt by sandblasting to
grade Sa 2½ as per Svensk Standard SIS 055900. The cleaned surface must be dry and free
from dust.

3.2 Immediately after cleaning the surface is to be primed with one continuous coat of Densolen
Primer HT (or equal) quick drying primer which must be allowed to dry completely (approx.
drying time 5 to 10 minutes).

3.3 The cleaned dry primed surface to be spirally wrapped, by hand (up to 4" NPS) or wrapping
machine, with Densolen S-40 (or equal) using a 50% overlap with sufficient tension to ensure

complete bonding. If a single length of Densolen S-40 or equal is insufficient to cover the
complete joint area, a splice may be made by lapping a minimum of 150 mm onto the end of
wrapping already applied.

3.4 If, in the case equal materials being used, the manufacturer’s application instructions differ from
those above, then the manufacturer’s written instructions shall be followed.

3.5 Immediately after or concurrently the clean, wrapped surface shall be over wrapped with
Densolen R-20 or equal using a %50 overlap with sufficient tension to ensure complete
bonding.

3.6 The pipe ends shall be free of coating for 150 mm length to allow for welding.

3.7 Coating and Wrapping of Welded field Joints and fittings

3.7.1 Outside coating and wrapping shall not be applied to any welds which have not been previously
tested hydraulically.

3.7.2 Field joints are to be coated with shrinkable isolation material when it is heated.

3.7.3 Bare metal at the joint to be thoroughly cleaned by wire brushing to remove all rust, mill scale
weld spatter etc.

3.7.4 The clean dry prepared bare metal and existing protective wrapping 150 mm from edge of
existing wrapping to be primed with one continuous coat of Densolen Primer HT or equal which
must be allowed to dry completely (approx 5 to 10 minutes).

3.7.5 The dry clean primed surface to be spirally wrapped with Densolen S-40 or equal using 50%
overlap with sufficient tension to ensure complete conformability. The wrapping of joints shall
commence at a minimum of 150 mm over the already applied wrapping.

3.7.6 Immediately after or concurrently the clean, wrapped surface shall be over wrapped with
Densolen R-20 or equal using a %50 overlap with sufficient tension to ensure complete
bonding.

3.8 Testing of Outside Coating and wrapping

3.8.1 One pipe length in every ten shall be tested for bonding by means of three sided coupon. The
two parallel incisions must be at least 100 mm apart. Bonding shall be considered satisfactory
only if wrapping layers cannot be pulled away by hand. All such cut-outs shall be carefully
repaired. Bonding tests shall be carried out 24 hours after the completion of the coating.

3.8.2 All external coating and wrapping shall be tested for holidays by means of a pulse type detector
at a voltage of 20,000. All holidays found shall be carefully repaired by using patch technique to
be carried out strictly in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

3.8.3 All tests shall be carried out in the presence of Owner's inspector.

3.8.4 All defects found shall be promptly repaired and retested.

3.9 Materials

3.9.1 Piping Material to be strictly in accordance with piping material specifications

3.9.2 Densolen Primer HT or equal.

3.9.3 Densolen S-40 or equal.

3.9.4 Densolen R-20 or equal.

4 APPLICATION OF COATING AND WRAPPING FOR PIPE LINES SUBJECT TO SERVICE

TEMPERATURE ABOVE 65ºC.

4.1 The line shall be installed in steel sleeves (for typical layout see FWI Job Standard BD0506A-
53B14.1 sheet 1 to 3). These sleeves shall be coated and wrapped, .

4.2 The steel sleeves shall be treated as described in paragraphs 3.1 to 3.6.

4.3 Field joints shall be fabricated as shown in FWI Job Standard BD0506A-53B14.1 sheet 3)

4.3.1 The loose collar to be welded to the pipe sleeve and the total joint coated and wrapped in situ
as described in paragraphs 3.7.1 to 3.7.6 after the line has been hydrostatically tested.

4.4 All valves, changes of directions of pipe runs, all Tee junctions to be located in concrete pits.

4.5 Testing of outside coating and wrapping of pipe sleeves shall be as described in paragraphs
3.8.1 to 3.8.4.

4.6 Materials

As described in paragraphs 3.9.1 to 3.9.4.

4.6.1 The pipe sleeve and loose collar material shall be in accordance with piping material
specifications.

5 HANDLING AND STORAGE

5.1 Coated and wrapped pipe shall be handled with non abrasive canvas or leather belts, or with
other equipment designed to prevent damage to coating.

5.2 Skids used to support coated and wrapped pipe shall be padded.

5.3 Walking on the pipe shall not be permitted.

5.4 Laid pipe in the trenches shall be covered in a shortest time.
