Needs Assessment Presentation Plan

Overview:
Topic: Needs Assessment for the Women’s Center
Setting: The HUB/Blackbridge Hall
Audience: Employees/Student workers at the Women’s Center
Instructional Objectives:
Cognitive Objectives:
1. Each participant will identify a feasible way to increase marketing for the Women’s
Center.
2. Each participate will correctly identify what activities/events survey participants want
the Women’s Center to host.
Affective Objectives:
1. Each participant will identify 1 strength, 1 weakness,1 opportunity, and 1 threat
during the gallery walk.
Psychomotor Objectives:
Introductory/Focus Statement:
 63% of participants believe that there is not enough information advertised about events
for the Women’s Center.
 93.6% of people felt either comfortable or very comfortable with coming in to the
Women’s Center.
 79.4% of participants do not partake in clubs or events that the Women’s Center has.
Outline of Content:
1. Identify the purpose/overview of needs assessment
a. The purpose of this needs assessment is to determine what aspects of the women’s
center people know about. The women’s center has many services, so it is my job
to determine which services are being used, and how people are learning about
these services, as well as showcase how many people are attending these
events/services.
b. This needs assessment is useful because we are then able to determine what
aspects of the women’s center should be changed or expanded upon to have this
center grow and have more of an impact on the Georgia College campus.
c. We can also use this information to see what types of people are more likely to
come into the women’s center and feel comfortable.
i. As well as the frequency of the services used.
2. Internal vs. External factors
a. Internal factors are resources and experiences, so an example would be how
human resources works with the Women’s Center, how we work hand and hand
with the Title IX coordinator and physical resources like location, activities and
programs.
b. External factors are things associated with future trends, demographics and
legislation.
c. Internal factor are the strengths and weaknesses.
d. External factors are the opportunities and threats.
i. Strengths
ii. Weaknesses
iii. Opportunities
iv. Threats
e. These factors are important because then we can create a plan on how we can use
our threats and change them into becoming opportunities, as well as morphing our
weaknesses into strengths.
3. Data – use the graphs from Qualtrics, go through all graphs quickly but explain them.
i. Overview:
ii. Question 1 is used to determine the age range of people that completed
this survey. 44% of people were 18-20 years old, 53% were ages 21-23,
and 1.47% for participants were 30-39 years old and 60+.
iii. Question 2 determined what gender participants identifies with. Out of 68
participants, 65 identifies as female, 2 identified as male and 1 identified
as nonbinary.
1. This statistic does not come as a surprise because 62.2% of
incoming undergraduate students are female.
iv. The next question I ask is about how you identify your ethnicity. 1.43%
identified as African American. 2.86% are Hispanic/Latino. 2.86% are
Asian. 1.43% identified as native American, and 91.43% identified as
Caucasian.
1. This statistic is also not surprising because 83.2% of incoming
undergraduates are Caucasian.
v. I go on to ask in question 4 what your involvement at GCSU is. 91.43%
are students, 5.71% are staff, and 2.86% are faculty.
1. This statistic showcases that most people who took this survey are
students, which is a good thing in my opinion, because the students
are voicing their opinions and it is them who we are trying to make
comfortable in the Women’s Center as well as they are our primary
audience when it comes to events.
vi. In question 5 I ask what participants comfort level is when they come to
the women’s center, and over all more people feel comfortable than
uncomfortable. 69.1% of people feel comfortable coming into the
women’s center whereas, 5.8% of people feel uncomfortable.
1. This statistic shows that most people feel comfortable coming into
the women’s center, but also leaves room for improvement. 5
people out of the 68 that participated feel uncomfortable or very
uncomfortable in the women’s center.
vii. Question 6 I ask if participants believe there is a need for women’s
services at GCSU. Luckily, 88.24% said yes, but a total of 11.76% said no
or are unsure
1. This goes to prove that the women’s center needs to showcase how
important they are to the GCSU community and inform students in
which all the ways that the women’s center is needed on campus.
viii. Question 7 asked if participants were involved in any clubs or events the
women’s center puts on. 79.4% of participants answered no.
1. This statistic is a disappointment.
ix. In Question 8, I ask if there is enough information out on campus about
Women’s Center events. 63% said no, and 14.7% said they were unsure.
1. This goes to show that even with all our efforts to increase
marketing for the events. It is still not enough, and we must
produce other ways to tell individuals about our events. I will come
back to this question later in the presentation, and we will all
discuss other ways we can increase our marketing throughout
campus.
x. I wanted to see how many participants also followed us on Facebook, or
Instagram because that is where we showcase a lot of our events and give
a better explanation as to what will be happening at the event. 75% of
participants do not follow the Women’s Center on Facebook or Instagram,
and this is a big reason as to why the participation rates of the Women’s
Center is lower than what we would like.
xi. Question 10 asks how individuals find out about our events. 34% learn
about our events through friends, and 33% learn about it through posters
around campus.
1. We need to create a larger span of how people are learning about
our event other than just through friends and posters. We will
produce ideas later in the presentation.
xii. I also wanted to learn about what are the known resources at the Women’s
Center. The majority of participants knew only about advocacy services
related to power-based interpersonal violence, advocacy services related to
unplanned pregnancy and support groups.
1. The women’s center harbors many more topics other than these
three and we need to find a way in which we can inform GCSU
student population about these other services.
xiii. Question 12 asks if participants attended a Women’s Center event. 57.35%
of people answered, no.
1. I believe that this is due to lack of knowing about the event. We
have previously shown that most people hear about the event
through friends, so we need to have as many people know about
these events as possible to get the most participation.
2. It also could be because people are unsure about what will happen
at the event. If people do not know what is required of them at an
event they will most likely not attend due to the fact they are
unsure.
xiv. I went further into question 12 and asked specifically what events
participants did attend. The most frequently attended events were the
clothesline project, vagina monologues, and BRAVE training.
1. I would like to see an increase of participation rates for all our
events, because the more events people attend, the higher the
chance that they will be more open to other individual’s needs.
2. This could be because individuals do not know that they are
attending Women’s Center events.
xv. The next question, I asked how often participants use the women’s center
services. 46 people answered that they use our services 1-5 times a year,
and then it goes down to 5 participants used our services 1-5 times every
three months.
1. We usually have events multiple times a month. So, there are many
opportunities for individuals to participate more.
xvi. The next question I wanted to hear from them. I wanted to know what new
programming they would be more likely to attend and wanted to see here
at the Women’s center. 48 people wanted a program based on adulting
101, 45 people wanted some sort of stress relief program, 32 people
wanted to learn more about body image. 31 people wanted a program on
self-esteem. And 25 people wanted an event based on sexual education.
1. These are all very doable programs.
4. Analyze findings—then go back and highlight the graphs that showcase my points and
draw conclusions from them.
a. Question 8-- Is there enough information advertised about events for the
Women’s Center?
i. Think, Pair, Share activity
b. Question 15-- What type of programming would you be interested in attending?
i. We already have in the works a new sexual education/ information
program that Christen Klein has created. We will also be doing a mindful
May during the week before finals.
ii. If we just created a program that had to do with body image and self-
esteem this would be quite helpful to many women. Body image issues
has been around for as long as anyone can remember, so it would be great
to hit on these issues in a group setting so people can know that it is not
just them. Body image effects everyone.
iii. The next program we should add would be a adulting 101. In this program
we can add in the salary negotiation, a program we also have that is not
well used.
5. Key Findings
a. Determine from the graph where are biggest problem areas are.
i. Major—Marketing
ii. Moderate—New programming
6. Recommended next steps
a. Use those problem areas and produce solutions on how to fix these problems.
b. Major Solution—marketing
i. We can work with the marketing department and work with them to create
another outlet for marketing majors who need practicum experience. There
is a practicum 1 and a practicum 2, so we could potentially receive 2
different marketing majors. It would be this person’s job to increase our
marketing. They would have access to our Facebook page as well as our
Instagram page.
ii. If this option does not work, then there could be a new position added to
the student workers, a social media manager. This individual would have
the same responsibilities as the marketing major. They would need to
schedule when they are posting on the Women’s Center
Facebook/Instagram page as well as inform students of all events that the
Women’s Center will be hosting in a timely manner.
iii. A way that we could get more followers on Facebook/Instagram is to table
and if you show whoever is tabling that you have followed the women’s
center on Facebook & Instagram you get a prize on scene (fidget
spinners/buttons/card holder that attaches to phone/jelly bracelet) One
would also be entered in to win a gift bag, the winner would be told they
won on Facebook, and to come get their prize at the women’s center. They
would then get their picture taken and showcased on the women’s center
to show that they got the gift. This tabling and drawing can occur every
month or however often necessary, to get as followers as possible.
iv. We could work with the restaurants more and have them place our
coasters throughout their establishment, so that the GCSU community
could see how far our reach is throughout the community.
v. Work with the Athletic Department and see if we can host a raffle, or
showcase our memorabilia at their games.
c. Moderate Solution – create more programming
i. We could create a book club for people whom want to talk about body
image and self-esteem. The book Minding the Body by Patricia Foster
would be an insightful book to begin with because it is a book full of other
individuals’ stories about how they view themselves. Each story is only 4
or five pages, so for each meeting time, we could assign a different
personal story. They could then go around and if they feel comfortable
share their own stories.
1. Or a speaker, whom has dealt with body image issues could come
and talk about how they began to love themselves the way they
are. Or just told the raw truth that everyone has doubts about their
body.
2. We could put on a movie that has to do with self-esteem/body
image like I feel pretty, the new movie with Amy Schumer. We
would have to make sure that this movie is appropriate, but a body
positive movie like that could spark a discussion after, and if
people are interested we could host discussion groups from there
on and have specific topics to talk about. And could potentially
showcase the book club there or read excerpts from Minding the
Body at that time.
ii. We need to create a presentation on adulting 101 this would include:
salary negotiation, how taxes work, how to pay bills, budgeting your
finances, how to jump a car, how to change a tire, how to save for
retirement, how to buy and mortgage a home, how to get loans, how to
build up personal credit, how to pay off credit card debt, how to create an
emergency fund, how to choose an insurance carrier.
