General Information (Electronic Control System)

SMCS - 1931
Illustration 1 g00660668
Block Diagram Of The Engine Control System And Hydraulic Pump Control System

The engine control system and the pump control system monitors continuously. The control will
adjust the speed of the engine and the speed of the hydraulic pump according to the machine
conditions and the selections of the operator. The control system consists of the following
components: engine and pump control (controller), monitor panel, various switches, sensors, relays,
solenoids, lamps and alarms.

The controller communicates with the monitor panel via a data link. The monitor panel will provide
the following information to the operator and/or service persons: warnings for an occurrence of
problem (s), the conditions of the machine systems, diagnostic information and adjustment
information. The monitor panel is also used by the operator to select operational functions: power
mode, travel speed and et cetera.

Normal Operation
SMCS - 1931

The controller is primarily designed to control the engine speed and the output of the hydraulic pump
according to the following items:

z Engine speed

z The selected POWER mode of operation

z The load on the engine

By selecting different POWER modes, the operator can try to match the output of the hydraulic
pump to the demand of the hydraulic system. By selecting different engine speeds, the operator can
try to match the amount of engine speed to the operation. Under certain conditions, the controller
operates differently. See the topic "Exceptions" for additional information. The controller will also
monitor the condition of the machine systems and the controller will alert the operator about possible
problems.

Regulation Of The Engine Speed

The controller processes the input from the engine speed dial. A signal is then sent from the
controller to the governor actuator. This signal causes the actuator to move the governor lever. The
controller moves the governor lever until the signal from the governor feedback sensor informs the
controller that the governor lever is in the correct position for the proper operation of the engine at
the desired speed.

Exceptions
Control Of The Governor Lever By The Engine Speed

During normal conditions, the controller obtains the correct engine speed by moving the governor
actuator to a predetermined position according to the signal from the governor actuator feedback
sensor. If a problem occurs in the feedback sensor and/or the circuits of the sensor and no demand
for hydraulics is made, the controller will use the signal from the engine speed sensor. The controller
will move the governor actuator until the engine speed is close to the selected engine speed that was
set by using the engine speed dial. After the position of the engine speed dial is changed, there may
be a five to ten second delay before the new engine speed is obtained by the controller. When the
engine speed is controlled in this way, the AEC and the functions of one touch low idle are
overridden. When the controller is operating in this way, the monitor will display the "L" and the
"A" in the first character position and third character position.

Control Of Pump Output

Under normal temperatures of the hydraulic oil, the pump is regulated by the target engine speed.
When the hydraulic oil cannot reach a certain temperature level, the controller will operate so that
the regulation of the pump is performed by a certain constant power shift pressure. The power shift
pressure will perform the regulation of the pump instead of the target engine speed. The pump output
by this constant power shift pressure is reduced two to ten percent. This could result in sluggish
machine operation. Under constant control of the power shift pressure, control of the pump
summation does not function.

Power Mode Operation

SMCS - 1931

The controller can be operated at different engine speeds and the controller can be operated in one of
three different POWER modes.

The controller receives input information from the engine speed dial switch, the power mode selector
switch and the engine speed sensor. The controller processes the information and the controller sends
a signal to the proportional reducing valve solenoid. The proportional reducing valve changes the
electric signal into a hydraulic signal (power shift pressure). The power shift pressure is used to
regulate the output of the pump. As the power shift pressure increases, the pump will destroke in
order to decrease the output of the pump. If the power shift pressure decreases, the pump will
upstroke in order to increase the output of the pump. For more information about the flow control by
the pump regulator, see Systems Operation, "Hydraulic System" for the machine that is being
serviced.

Pump output is regulated according to the position of the engine speed dial. The dial position of 10
will cause a minimum of power shift pressure for a maximum allowable output for the pump. As the
dial is turned in a direction to decrease the speed, the power shift pressure will increase for a
decreased output in the pump. The maximum allowable pump output is set with the power mode
selector switch. The power mode switch provides two modes, power mode and standard mode.
When an indicator that is next to the power mode switch illuminates by pushing the power mode
switch, the power mode is selected and 100 percent of the engine output is available. When the
indicator is turned off, standard mode is selected and 90 percent of engine output is available.

The modes that are listed below represent the P-Q characteristic curves of the Pump Pressure/Flow
for three power modes. With the engine speed dial in the 10 position, the output of the pump in each
mode is listed:

Power Mode - 100 percent

Standard Mode - 90 percent

Fine Control Mode - 70 percent

The pump output for the 315B is listed:

Power Mode - 100 percent

Standard Mode - 85 percent

Fine Control Mode - 65 percent

Illustration 1 g00021056
P-Q Characteristic Curves
Illustration 2 g00662815
P-Q Characteristic Curves

Power Mode
Engine Speed Dial At Position 10

The power mode is used for heavy work that requires a higher engine speed. Selecting the power
mode with the engine speed dial in position 10 will allow regulation of output of the pump. This
regulation is accomplished through engine speed and delivery pressure. This regulation provides the
maximum available engine horsepower for a work operation.

The controller will regulate the pump so that the engine can maintain the target speed. This will give
the maximum torque and the maximum horsepower that is available from the engine. As a load on
the engine is increased, there is an incremental decrease from the no-load speed: 1980 rpm for 311B,
2080 rpm for 312B, 2300 rpm for 315B, 1970 rpm for 320B, 2120 rpm for 322B, 2180 rpm for 325B
and 1960 rpm for 330B. The RPM for the rated speed 1800 rpm for 311B, 1900 rpm for 312B, 2100
rpm for 315B, 1800 rpm for 320B, 1950 rpm for 322B, 2000 rpm for 325B and 1800 rpm for 330B.
The rated speed provides the maximum available horsepower. If the load is increased further, the
engine speed decreases below the rated speed to the target speed: 1780 rpm for 311B, 1880 rpm for
312B, 2080 rpm for 315B, 1780 rpm for 320B, 1930 rpm for 322B, 1980 rpm for 325B and 1800
rpm for 330B. The controller will regulate the output of the pump so that the engine speed will be
maintained at the target speed. While the engine is operating at the target speed, the horsepower of
the engine is approximately equal to the horsepower for the rated speed. The engine runs at a speed
that is close to the target speed for most of the pressure/flow points on the power mode.

The controller will monitor the engine speed through the speed sensor. The controller will send the
appropriate signals to the proportional reducing valve in order to maintain the target engine speed.
The proportional reducing valve will use the signal to adjust the power shift pressure to the regulator
of the pump. Therefore, the power shift pressure will regulate the output of the pump in order to
maintain the target engine speed.

In the power mode, the power shift pressure will be lower than the pressure in the other two modes.
The delivery flow will begin to decrease after the delivery pressure of the pump has reached a higher
pressure than the pressure in the other two modes. Therefore, the output of the pump is higher than
the pressure of the other two modes. If the available engine horsepower for the main pump decreases
due to the addition of an attachment pump or adverse conditions, the main pumps will be regulated
in the following manner:

z The main pumps are designed to allow the addition of attachment pumps. If an attachment
pump is added, the engine can maintain the target speed until a maximum of 30 percent of
available engine horsepower is used for the attachment pump. When the main pumps use the
other 70 percent of the available engine horsepower or more, the target speed is maintained
through main pump regulation by power shift pressure.

z The engine horsepower can be decreased by the following conditions: engine wear, low grade
of fuel, high altitude operation and other conditions. If the engine horsepower is decreased by
any of previous conditions, the main pumps are regulated electronically in order to allow the
engine to run at the target speed until the engine horsepower has decreased by 30 percent.

z As the engine horsepower is decreased, the engine can reach the target speed at a lower output
of the pump than the speed at the maximum engine horsepower. This allows the engine to
operate without stalling even if there is a maximum of 30 percent reduction in engine
horsepower.

Engine Speed Dial At Position 9 Or Less

The power shift pressure will remain relatively constant at a selected position of the engine speed
dial until the no-load engine speed decreases 250 rpm or more. If the engine speed is decreased
below this level, the power shift pressure is increased in order to reduce the pump output. Therefore,
the available engine horsepower to the pump is less than the horsepower at the 10 position for the
engine speed dial. The pump is regulated by constant power shift pressure. This provides pump
output according to a certain P-Q characteristic curve.

This power mode and the settings of the engine speed dial are used to perform operations under
heavy loads or trenching. These operations require a slightly reduced operating speed for the
machine. If the engine speed dial is in the 9 position and the power mode is "III", a slightly higher
power shift pressure is produced. This pressure is slightly higher than the pressure that would be
produced if the engine speed dial was in the 10 position. This reduces pump output by about ten
percent.

Standard Mode
The standard mode is used to perform ordinary work. Selecting this mode will slightly decrease the
working speed of the machine and the noise level and fuel consumption of the machine will be
reduced. Under the following conditions, the performance of the machine will resemble a setting of
the 9 on the engine speed dial:

z The machine is in the standard mode.

z The engine speed dial is set at 10.

z The machine is not under a load.

Other positions of the engine speed dial are not affected. When the travel control is used or the
control is used with other controls simultaneously, the power that is available for the travel circuits is
equivalent to the power of the power mode.
The power shift pressure will remain relatively constant at a position on the engine speed dial of 1 to
9 until the no-load engine speed is decreased by 250 RPM for the following models: 311B, 312B,
315B, 320B, 322B, 325B and 300 rpm for the 330B or more.

If the RPM is decreased below this level, the power shift pressure is increased in order to reduce the
pump output. The power shift pressure in the standard mode is higher than the pressure in the power
mode. This will cause the pump to destroke at an earlier time than the amount of time that is required
in the power mode.

Fine Control Mode

The power mode "I" is used to perform light duty work. This work does not require high speed and
high power. Selecting this power mode will slow the working speed. The reduction of the working
speed will improve the fine control operation. The reduction in the speed will also reduce the amount
of noise and fuel consumption.

The operations of the machine will resemble the 8 position, 9 position or the 10 position of the
engine speed dial, if the engine speed dial is in the 7 position of the fine control mode. Other
positions of the engine speed dial are not affected. The available power for the travel circuits is
equivalent to the available power of the standard mode when the travel control is used or the control
is used with other controls simultaneously.

The power shift pressure will remain relatively constant at the setting of 1 to 7 of the engine speed
dial, until the no-load engine speed has decreased by 250 rpm or more. If the RPM is decreased
below this level, the power shift pressure is increased in order to reduce the pump output. The power
shift pressure in fine control mode is higher than the pressure in the standard mode. This pressure
will cause the pump to destroke at an earlier time than the time that is required in the standard mode.
However, the power shift pressure will keep a higher constant level than the level of the standard
mode. The pressure is not affected by the power mode switch.

Automatic Engine Control

SMCS - 1931

The AEC will reduce the engine speed, when minimal hydraulic demand or no hydraulic demand is
present and the engine speed dial is at the 5-10. This action will help to reduce the noise level and
the fuel consumption. If the hydraulic system is activated past a load level, the engine speed will
return to the setting of the engine speed dial.

A signal is sent to the governor actuator in order to reduce the engine speed, when the controller
receives a no- load signal for 3 seconds or a small load signal for 10 seconds from a pressure switch
in the hydraulic system.

The AEC will operate in two modes. These modes can be controlled by the AEC switch. The AEC
switch is located on the monitor. The AEC will be set to "AEC ON" mode automatically, when the
engine start switch is turned to the ON position. The indicator next to the key start switch will
illuminate. The indicator will turn OFF, when the AEC switch is pressed. The AEC is then set to the
"AEC OFF" mode.

First stage of the AEC Mode With "AEC OFF" - The controller will control the governor actuator
directly, when minimal hydraulic demand or no hydraulic demand is requested. The governor lever
will be moved to a position in order to reduce the engine speed by a maximum of 100 rpm
automatically.

Second stage of the AEC Mode With "AEC ON" - The AEC portion of the controller will control
the governor actuator. Engine speed is reduced to 1300 rpm automatically, when minimal hydraulic
demand is present. The engine speed will be reduced by a maximum of 100 rpm when a small load is
placed on the machine.

Under a minimal load, the rate of automatic engine speed drop is dependent on the current position
of the engine speed dial.

If the temperature of the hydraulic oil is low, the engine speed will not be reduced automatically
even though the AEC switch is in the ON position. The AEC will not function correctly while the
backup switch is in the MAN position. For more information about the operation of the AEC, see
Hydraulic System Systems Operation, "Pilot Circuit" in the module for the machine that is being
serviced.

One Touch Low Idle

SMCS - 1931

The controller will monitor the travel switch and the implement swing pressure switch continuously.
These switches are monitored in order to determine the hydraulic demand. One switch or both of the
switches will close when the hydraulics are used. When the low idle switch is pressed, the controller
will check the pressure switch inputs in order to determine the amount of hydraulic demand. If no
demand is requested, the controller will activate the low idle system. The low idle system will adjust
the engine RPM to the equivalent position of 2 on the engine speed dial. The low idle system will
override the automatic engine speed control system (AEC). When the low idle switch is pressed
again, the engine speed will recover in the following manner:

z The engine speed will return to the original setting, if the engine speed dial is in the 4 position
or less.

z The engine speed will return 1300 rpm, if the engine speed dial is in the 5 position or more and
the automatic engine speed control is ON.

z If the engine speed dial is placed in the 5 position or more and the automatic engine speed
control is OFF, the engine speed will return to 100 rpm lower than the original dial setting.

If a hydraulic control is activated the following conditions or a combination of the following

conditions may result:

z The low idle system will be deactivated.

z The engine speed will return to the original setting of the engine speed dial.

z The engine speed will return to the setting of the power mode if the standard mode or the fine
control mode was selected.

Monitor Panel

(1) Boom priority mode

(2) Swing priority mode

(3) Fine control mode

(4) User mode

There are four work mode switches for different implement speeds or swing speed. The switches are
on the left side of the monitor panel. Only one mode can be selected at a time.

The controller performs the following functions. Each of the following functions require the use of
the keys on the monitor panel in order to make a selection. The monitor sends the request to the
controller. Then, the controller will activate the component that is required to perform the function.
Boom Priority Mode
When the boom priority mode switch is depressed, the indicator that is located next to the switch
illuminates. The boom priority mode switch is depressed for general use. When the machine is in the
boom priority mode, the boom raise movement is faster. The boom priority mode is suitable for
loading of trucks and for trenching.

When you move the boom control lever and the pilot pressure reaches 2480 kPa (360 psi), the switch
for the boom RAISE pressure is turned ON.

The controller activates the fine control solenoid in order to ensure that the speed of the boom is
faster. The swing priority solenoid and the fine control solenoid will not be activated by any other
operation of the control lever.

Swing Priority Mode

When the swing priority mode switch is depressed, the indicator that is located next to the switch
illuminates. The swing priority mode switch is depressed in order to place priority on the bottom
pump flow to the swing motor. The swing priority mode is suitable for loading of trucks and for
excavating.

When the swing priority mode is selected, the swing priority solenoid is activated. The solenoid is
activated in order to ensure swing priority regardless of any other operation of the control lever.

Fine Control Mode

When the fine control mode switch is depressed, the indicator that is located next to the switch
illuminates. The fine control mode switch is depressed in order to place priority on the top pump
flow to the boom and bottom pump flow for stick in. The fine control mode is suitable for fine finish
work or material handling.

When the fine control mode is selected, the fine control solenoid is activated. The solenoid is
activated regardless of any other operation of the control lever.

During stick in operation, one pump flow drives the boom. This gives the top pump priority. During
stick out operation, mixed flow from both pumps drives the stick. This delivers faster response.

Engine power is limited to about 70 percent. When the engine power is limited, all of the actuators
move slowly except for the boom and the stick. The position of the speed dial position is limited to 7
maximum.

User Mode
When the user mode switch is depressed, the indicator that is located next to the switch illuminates.
This mode has three sub-modes. The desired sub-mode can be selected by pushing this switch
repeatedly. The sub-mode is displayed on the right side of the display. The following symbols are
used:U1, U2 and U3

Tamping Mode U1

When the tamping mode is selected, the hydraulic circuit is set in order to achieve smooth vertical
operation of the boom.

The two speed solenoid and the fine control solenoid are turned ON.

When the boom is lowered, the center bypass passage is not completely closed. This is true during
full operation of the boom control lever. The partially open center bypass passage causes the
negative flow control pressure to be greater than 0 kPa (0 psi). This limits the pump flow. The
limited pump flow causes the boom to lower slowly. In addition, the machine will not raise off the
ground when the bucket is lowered against the ground.

When the boom is raised, the boom will move slowly due to the limited pump flow.

Hammer Mode U2

Hammer mode is used in order to provide optimum pump flow to hydraulic attachments. Required
pump flow must be stored in the controller before the hammer mode is used.

The optimum pump flow and pressure are different among hydraulic attachments. The hammer mode
is set up in the service mode. The controller calculates the power shift pressure. The controller sends
the required pressure to the hydraulic system in order to obtain the required pump flow. All of the
calculations are accomplished under the present engine speed.

When any of the travel circuits are activated, the hammer mode is turned off.

Customer Mode U3

The customer mode has several options. The options must be preset. When the mode is selected, the
selected options are available. The following list of functions is available:

z Boom Priority Mode

z Swing Priority Mode

z Fine Control Mode

z Maximum Position of the Throttle Dial Setting

z Maximum Hydraulic Power

z Delay Time for the AEC

z Engine Speed in the Second Stage of the AEC

z First Stage of the AEC or the Second Stage of the AEC

z Power Mode ON or Power Mode OFF

Additional Functions
SMCS - 1931

The controller also performs the following functions in addition to normal operation. For each of the
following functions, use the keys on the monitor panel to make selections. The monitor will send this
information to the controller. Then, the controller will activate the relays or the solenoids in order to
perform the function.

Travel Speed
The "TRAVEL SPEED" key is used to select one of the following two travel speeds:

z HIGH

z LOW

When the "HIGH" travel speed is selected, the controller will activate the travel speed solenoid. This
activation will cause the travel speed to increase according to the travel load. Selecting the "LOW"
travel speed will deactivate the travel speed solenoid. This action will cause the travel speed to
decrease. For more information, see the following topics:

z Hydraulic System Systems Operation, "Trenching Operation"

z Hydraulic System Systems Operation, "Leveling Operation"

z Hydraulic System Systems Operation, "Pilot Circuit"

z Hydraulic System Systems Operation, "Travel Control"

Backup System
Illustration 1 g00662823
(1) Backup switch

(2) Speed change switch

The controller has a backup system in order to prevent uncontrolled operation of the pump and/or
engine. When the backup switch (1) is placed in the manual position, the following conditions result:

1. The proportional reducing valve is disconnected from the drive circuit of the proportional
reducing valve. Then, the reducing valve is driven by a constant current that is adjusted by the
backup resistor. The power shift pressure is kept constant and pump output is in the standard
mode.

2. The monitor does not display any information. The controller and the monitor are not
receiving power.

3. The engine speed can be controlled by the speed change switch (2). The engine speed will be
increased, if the speed change switch is placed in the rabbit position. The engine speed will be
decreased, if the switch is placed in the tortoise position. The switch returns to the neutral
position when the switch is released.

4. The swing parking brake is released. However, the parking brake is engaged when the primary
pilot pressure is reduced to near zero by placing the hydraulic activation control lever to the
lock position or by stopping the engine.

Prevention Of High Speed Start Of The Engine

In a conventional excavator, the engine will start in high speed with the engine speed dial in a high
position (10) after the engine has been stopped. The following information will describe the actions
that are designed in order to prevent a high speed start.

When the engine key start switch is placed in the OFF position, the governor actuator will stop. The
governor lever is maintained in the identical position. The engine will restart at a RPM of 1300 or
1000 rpm, if the engine is stopped and the second stage of the AEC is operating. The engine will also
restart at a RPM of 1300 or 1000 rpm, if the engine is stopped and the low idle switch is in the ON
position. This function is designed to keep the governor actuator in position when the operation is
terminated. Any of the following conditions can cause the termination:

1. A control lever or a pedal is operated. A implement/swing switch, travel switch or boom raise
pressure switch is turned to the ON position.
2. The engine speed dial is operated.

3. The AEC switch is operated.

4. The power mode switch is operated.

Then, the engine speed will correspond to the position of the engine speed dial. Operation of the low
idle switch will also terminate this function. However, the engine speed is 1000 rpm even if the
position of the engine speed dial is greater than 2.

The engine will restart at a high speed, if the governor actuator is held in a high speed position
before stopping the engine. The speed of the engine will decrease to 1300 rpm. The speed is
automatically decreased 3 seconds after the starting of the engine. The second stage of the AEC must
be in the ON position.

Preventing Over Speed During Low Engine Oil Pressure

This function is designed to prevent the engine from starting at a high speed during a condition of
low oil pressure. After the engine oil filter is replaced, a long time may be required before the engine
oil pressure will reach the specified level. The turbocharger may be damaged, if the engine runs at
the speed dial position of 10. The following information describes this function.

The engine speed will be limited to the position of 5, if the engine oil pressure switch is open. The
engine speed will also be limited to the position of 5, if the governor actuator was held in the high
speed position before the stopping of the engine. The engine will start at the speed of the 5 position.

This function is designed to keep the governor actuator in position when the operation is terminated.

Swing Lock System

The swing parking brake is released immediately after any control lever of the boom, stick, bucket,
swing or attachment is operated. The swing parking brake is engaged 6.5 seconds after all the control
levers return to the neutral position. The swing parking brake is not released while the hydraulic
activation control lever is placed to the locked position. The swing parking brake is released by
turning the fine swing switch to the ON position, if the fine swing attachment is installed.

When the controller determines that it is necessary to change the speed of the engine and the output
of the hydraulic pump, the controller will actuate the governor actuator and the proportional reducing
valve. Each input and output of the controller is connected to the machine harness through two 40-
pin connectors.

Input/Output
The data link is a bidirectional component. The data link allows the controller to receive information
and the controller can send information. The data link is designed to allow communication between
the controller and the monitor. The data link is not a visible component. The data link consists of
internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring. The controller sends information through
the data link. The following list contains some examples: fuel level, engine coolant temperature and
the power mode that is selected to the monitor panel. The controller also receives requested
information from the monitor panel. The following list contains some examples: power mode and
fine control mode.

Input
Each input will describe the status of the machine system. Two types of inputs exist: switch type and
sensor type. Switches and harnesses provide an open or ground to the controller. Sensors and
harnesses provide a signal that changes to the controller.

Switch Input (Keyswitch)

The input of the key start switch connects to the controller through connector 1 and contact 4. The
key start switch will provide input information to the controller about the status of the key start
switch. When the key start switch is ON this input is at +battery.

Switch Input (Operational Type)

The operational switch inputs include the following connector contacts: 2-6, 2-7, 2-8, 2-15, 2-18, 2-
26, 2-36, 2-40, 1-13, 1-14, 1-22, 1-23, 1-24, 1-34 and 1-39. Each switch input will provide
information about operator requests and machine systems. The condition of the system is sent to the
controller through each input. The status of each input will be grounded, open or +battery. Each
input of the controller will receive information from the switches that are located in the machine
systems (pressure and temperature).

Sensor Input (Frequency)

An AC signal is present for the input of the frequency sensor (connector contact 2-24). The AC
signal is used to represent the speed of a machine system. The engine speed sensor provides an AC
signal to the controller. The controller measures the frequency (Hz) of the AC signals. The resulting
speed is used by the controller to make decisions.

Sensor Input (Alternator)

The sensor input for the alternator connects to connector contact 2-34. A square wave signal is
present at this input. The signal is used to represent the speed of the alternator. The controller
measures the frequency (Hz) of the square wave signal. The controller uses this information to make
determinations and the controller uses this information to monitor the output of the alternator. When
an abnormal condition exists, the controller will alert the operator.

Sensor Input (PWM)

Each of the following contacts are a sensor input to the controller: 2-9, 2-13, 2-21 and 2-30. A PWM
signal is present at these contacts. This signal will represent the condition of a machine system. For
example, the controller can monitor temperature. PWM sensors provide this information. The
controller measures the duty cycle of the PWM signal. This signal will represent the information that
is measured. The controller will use this information to perform decisions. When an abnormal
condition exists, the controller will alert the operator.

Sensor Input (Voltage)

Contact 2-29 is an input for voltage sensing. A voltage is present. This voltage will represent the
condition of a machine system. For example, the level of voltage is a condition that is monitored by
the controller. Analog sensors or senders provide this information. The controller measures the
voltage, which represents the measured information. The controller uses this information to make
decisions. The controller also uses this information to monitor machine systems. When an abnormal
condition exists the controller alerts the operator.

Output
The controller responds to decisions by sending electrical signals through the various outputs. The
outputs will create an action or the outputs will provide information. Three status indicators inside
the controller that are connected to the monitor panel are outputs of the controller. These outputs are
additional to the outputs that are listed in the table for Connector Contact Description. The monitor
panel shows the operating status of the engine and pump control system and diagnostic information.
The following solenoid outputs are used by the controller to cause an action: 2-3, 2-4, 2-10, 2-12, 2-
20, 2-21, 2-22, 2-27 and. This action could be energizing a solenoid, sounding an alarm or activating
a motor.

Operator Monitor
SMCS - 7490

Operator Monitor Panel

The monitor panel has two functions:

z Displaying information with gauges and indicators

z Allowing the operator and/or service person to input information to the controller

The monitor panel is used to enter commands into the controller. Some examples of these operations
are included: selecting operator modes, selecting service modes, changing parameters and many
other operations.

The monitor has three gauges and a number of alert indicators. Each gauge is dedicated to a
parameter within a machine system. Some of the possible parameters of the machine systems are
listed: hydraulic oil temperature, engine coolant temperature and fuel level. The gauges receive
information from sensors or senders that are connected to the controller. The controller uses the
information from each sensor input to calculate the value that is shown on the gauges. The
pictograph symbol (27) will identify the parameter of the machine system that is shown on each
gauge. The alert indicators (6-18) will notify the operator of an abnormal condition in a machine
system. The controller uses the information from the switches to determine when an abnormal
condition is present. The controller will send a message to the monitor panel and the monitor panel.
Then, the monitor panel FLASHES the alert indicator for the machine system with the abnormal
condition. The controller will process information from the switches of the monitor panel. The
switches are used in order to select various functions. The controller will receive this information
and the controller will perform the requested operation or mode of operation.

Note: The Alert indicator (12) will illuminate for active diagnostic codes that occur in the engine and
pump controller and the engine ECM.

Engine Speed Dial Switch

The engine speed dial switch is designed to inform the controller about the speed that is desired by
the operator. The engine speed dial switch has ten positions: 1-10. Each position of the switch has a
unique combination of connector contacts that close to contact 1. A combination of contact 2 through
contact 5 will close to contact 1. This switch will ground a unique combination of inputs for the
engine speed dial to the controller.
Illustration 2 g00663092
Travel Pressure Switch And Implement/Swing Pressure Switch

The travel pressure switch and the implement/swing pressure switch will monitor the hydraulic
system. These switches will inform the controller about the status of the hydraulic demands. When
there is no hydraulic demand these switches are open. The function of the automatic engine speed
control (AEC) of the controller will use these switches to determine operation. These switches are in
the normally open position, when the switches are not installed on the machine.

Illustration 3 g00662530
Low Idle Switch

The low idle switch is located on the top of the right control lever. During normal operation, the low
idle switch is open. When the low idle switch is pressed, the switch will close. This action will
ground the input to the controller. If the low idle switch is pressed one time and a hydraulic load is
not present, the engine speed will be reduced. If the low idle switch is pressed again or the hydraulic
system is being activated, the engine will return to the engine speed that was selected by the operator
by using the engine speed dial switch.

Note: If the low idle switch is pressed and a hydraulic load is present on the engine, the speed of the
engine will not be affected.

Illustration 4 g00662559
Hydraulic Oil Level Switch

The hydraulic oil level switch monitors the hydraulic oil level after the starter key switch is kept at
the ON position for 2 seconds or more. The controller checks hydraulic oil level with the switch. The
switch opens when the hydraulic oil level is below the normal operating level. This switch is in the
normally open position, when the switch is not installed on the machine.
Illustration 5 g00662566
Engine Oil Pressure Switch

During normal operation, the engine oil pressure switch is closed to ground. The switch opens when
engine oil pressure is less than the specified value for the switch. If the switch is in the open position,
the controller will notify the operator that the engine oil pressure is insufficient. This switch is
normally open, when the switch is not installed on the machine.

Illustration 6 g00663092
Boom RAISE Pressure Switch

If the control lever for the boom is moved to the full boom RAISE position, the boom RAISE
pressure switch will close. If "BOOM PRIORITY" is selected in the power mode, the controller will
activate the fine control solenoid. This solenoid valve then causes front pump oil to go to the boom
circuit only. The boom is capable of faster movements even if the operation is a combination of
boom and stick.

Illustration 7 g00588029
Engine Oil Level Switch

The engine oil level switch monitors the engine oil level after the starter key switch is kept at the ON
position for 2 seconds or more. The controller checks oil level with the switch. The switch opens
when the engine oil level is below the normal operating level. This switch is in the normally open
position when the switch is not installed on the machine.

Illustration 8 g00662587
Fine Swing Control Switch
The operation of fine swing will perform smooth start operations and stop operations of swing by
controlling the ON/OFF solenoid valve that is connecting the "A" port and "B" port of the swing
motor. When the fine swing control switch is turned to the ON position, the fine swing solenoid
valve is activated. The controller will release the swing park brake, when the controller detects the
switch in the ON position.

Attachment Pedal Pressure Switch

The attachment pedal pressure switch will close when the attachment pedal is operated. The hammer
mode is activated if the hammer mode is selected among the user modes. Even if the hammer mode
is selected, the mode shall not be activated while the attachment pedal is not operated. The boom
priority mode is activated rather than the hammer mode, if the attachment pedal pressure switch is
open.

Sensors
SMCS - 1931-NS

Sensors provide information to the controller about changing conditions. Some types of information
are listed: speed, temperature and fluid level. The sensor signal changes in a proportional manner.
This change will represent the changing condition. The controller will recognize the following types
of sensor signals:

Frequency - The sensor will produce an AC signal (sine wave or square wave) that varies in
frequency (Hz) as the condition changes.

Pulse Width Modulated - The sensor produces a digital signal (PWM) that varies the duty cycle as
the condition changes. The frequency of the signal will remain constant.

Engine Speed Sensor

Illustration 1 g00020598
Engine Speed Sensor

The engine speed sensor is located on the flywheel housing. An AC voltage is produced as the gear
teeth of the flywheel pass the tip of the sensor. The frequency of the voltage is proportional to the
speed of the gear teeth as the teeth pass the tip of the sensor. The controller uses this signal to make
decisions for the hydraulic pump and the engine.

Feedback Sensor

Illustration 2 g00662620
Feedback Sensor Inside The Governor Actuator

The feedback sensor is incorporated in the governor actuator. The sensor sends a PWM signal to the
controller. The PWM signal informs the controller about the position of the governor lever. The
controller will stop the activation of the governor actuator when the controller determines that the
information from the feedback sensor matches the selected setting of the engine speed dial and the
engine RPM.

Pump Discharge Pressure Sensor

Illustration 3 g00662624
Pump Discharge Pressure Sensor

The sensor will receive higher delivery pressure between the upper pump and the lower pump. This
sensor sends a signal of the higher pressure to the controller. The controller will use the signal in
order to change the travel speed. The travel speed is changed between the LOW and HIGH positions.

Fuel Level Sender

Illustration 1 g00666282
Fuel Level Sender

The fuel level sender is attached to a float in the fuel tank. As the fuel level changes, the float inside
the tank moves. The movement of the float will change the resistance of the sender. The voltage at
the input to the controller for the sender will change as the resistance of the sender changes. The
controller will monitor this voltage and the controller will compare this voltage to values that are
known. This comparison will determine the level of fuel in the tank.

Fluid Temperature Sender

Solenoid Valves
SMCS - 5479

Proportional Reducing Solenoid Valve

The proportional reducing solenoid valve changes the electrical signal from the controller into a
hydraulic signal for the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic signal (power shift pressure) is used to
regulate the output of the hydraulic pump. The controller varies the current (PWM signal) to the
solenoid and the solenoid valve modulates the power shift pressure. The controller varies the current
to the solenoid according to the selected power mode and the engine speed.

Solenoid Valves

Schematic Symbol Of A Solenoid

The solenoid valve is designed to direct the flow of hydraulic oil through the hydraulic system. The
controller will activate the proper solenoid valves according to the input from switches on the
monitor panel and the pressure switches in the hydraulic system of the machine. When the solenoids
are activated, a solenoid receives ground from the controller. The travel speed solenoid valve is
activated when "HIGH" is selected in the travel speed mode. The "rabbit" travel speed indicator is
illuminated when this mode is active. The fine control solenoid valve and the trenching solenoid
valve are designed to provide easy fine control and trenching operations. The solenoids have a
connector with two contacts. One contact receives a ground signal from the corresponding connector
contact (2-12, 2-21, 2-22 and 2-27) of the control and the other contacts of the solenoids are
connected to +battery in the fuse panel.

Governor Actuator Control

SMCS - 1716

Illustration 1 g00662620

The operator selects an engine speed by placing the engine speed dial in one of the ten positions. The
controller will determine if the engine is operating at the speed that was selected by comparing the
engine speed with the engine speed sensor. If the engine is not operating at the selected speed the
controller activates the governor actuator which moves the governor lever. The controller uses the
governor feedback sensor to place the governor lever in a position that corresponds to the selected
engine speed. The governor actuator uses a cable(s) to rotate the pulley. If the pulley is rotated
counterclockwise, the governor lever that is connected to the pulley will move in the accelerate
direction. If the pulley is rotated clockwise, the governor lever will move in the decelerate direction.

Alternator
The frequency output terminal of the alternator is connected to connector contact 2-34 of the
controller. The controller will monitor the signal on this circuit. This signal informs the controller
about the relative speed that the alternator is rotating. The frequency output terminal of the alternator
is the "R" terminal.

Data Link
The data link is an input and an output of the controller. The data link connects to the controller at
connector contact 1-15 and 1-16. The data link is designed to carry communications between the
controller and the monitor. The data link is not a visible component. The data link consists of
internal control circuits and a harness wiring. The data link is bidirectional. The controller can
receive information and the controller can send information through the data link. The controller
sends information about the fuel level, engine coolant temperature and many other signals to the
monitor panel. The controller also receives information from the key panel about the selected power
mode, the selected travel speed and other inputs.

Action Lamp
Illustration 1 g00666760

The FLASHING of the action lamp is designed to inform the operator about a condition that exists
that requires a change in the operation of the machine. The controller will instruct the monitor panel
to FLASH the action lamp when the controller determines that a warning category of 2 or 3 is
present.

Travel Alarm
The travel alarm connects to connector contact 2-31 of the controller. The SOUNDING of the travel
alarm will alert the area that the machine is moving.
