CORE Level C Winter ‘18

Week’s Theme: Free-time and Activities

Today’s Skills: Pronunciation and Speaking

Background: For the past three weeks, we’ve been studying when and how to use the simple present
tense. We have also been practicing intonation and word grouping. Now, on week 4, we’ve just started
seeing the simple past tense while talking about activities you do during your free-time (chores versus
fun). On Monday, we acquired new vocabulary. Yesterday, we learned the overall rules of the past tense
and a few irregular verbs. In today’s lesson, we’ll work on the pronunciation patterns of regular verbs
ending with –ed. We’ll practice it with speaking activities and expressions of time (e.g. last week, etc.).

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to distinguish the pronunciation patterns of verbs ending with –ed.
a. They will be able to give 2-3 examples of these verbs used in sentences, and
b. They will be able to recognize correct pronunciation of the verb within the example
sentence.
2. Students will be able to use such verbs to talk about their past experiences.
a. They will use verbs in the past tense to create about 5 sentences of real experiences
they’ve had.

Materials: Power Point Presentation, Expressions of Time and Verbs – Using the Past (See material
attached at the end) already cut and mixed for 3 groups, 3 cups to mix the papers.

Warm-up
o 4:20 – Welcome students to class. Thank those who arrived on time. Remind students of midterm
party on the 15th. (PP Slide 1)
o 4:25 – Question of the day: “What did you do today?” Explain to students that to talk about any
moment before now, even if earlier today, I can use the simple past. Let them answer the question
with a partner and circle around to help and check their past tense usage. Encourage them to go
into detail and speak as much as possible. (PP Slide 2)
o 4:30 – Ask a few voluntaries to report on what their partner has told them. Thank the volunteers
for their participation.

Present: Simple Past – Pronunciation I

o 4:35 – Tell students that, as promised, today we’re learning how to correctly pronounce the
regular verbs of the simple past. Ask them what sounds they remember they heard from
yesterday’s lesson using the verbs work and play (workt, plaid). Tell them there are three sounds
that we use. The first one is the /Id/ sound (PP Slide 3).
o 4:40 – Briefly explain the sound chart, /t/ and /d/ sounds become /Id/. Stress the fact that you
pronounce the vowel at the –ed syllable. However, don’t spend too much time talking. Let them
hear and practice the pronunciation after you.

Practice
o 4:45 – With the “More examples” at the bottom of the slide, ask students to take turns choosing a
verb and using it on a sentence in the simple past. (Obj. 1a) Their partner needs to hear carefully
and check for pronunciation. (Obj. 1b)

o Modeling – I can choose the verb invite and say “I invited my sister to go dancing.” My
partner will listen and say “Good job!” if my VERB pronunciation was correct. If not, my
partner needs to help me to say it right. Circle to evaluate performance.

Present
o 4:50 – Briefly explain the sound chart, voiceless sounds become /t/. Explain that these sounds are
all soft in the throat. Stress the fact that you DON’T pronounce the vowel at the –ed syllable.
However, don’t spend too much time talking. Let them hear and practice the pronunciation after
you. (Slide 4)

Practice
o 4:55 – With the “More examples” at the bottom of the slide, ask students to take turns choosing a
verb and using it on a sentence in the simple past. (Obj. 1a) Their partner needs to hear carefully
and check for pronunciation. (Obj. 1b) Circle to evaluate performance.

Present
o 5:00 – Briefly explain the sound chart, voiced sounds become /d/. Explain that these sounds
vibrate the throat. Stress the fact that you DON’T pronounce the vowel at the –ed syllable.
However, don’t spend too much time talking. Let them hear and practice the pronunciation after
you. (Slide 5)

Practice
o 5:05 – With the “More examples” at the bottom of the slide, ask students to take turns choosing a
verb and using it on a sentence in the simple past. (Obj. 1a) Their partner needs to hear carefully
and check for pronunciation. (Obj. 1b) Circle to evaluate performance.

Produce
o 5:10 – Get ready to talk! (Slide 6) Organize the class in three groups (2-3 people each). To each
group, hand them a cup with the verbs mixed inside (some irregular, some regular verbs). Outside
of the cup, make a pile with the time expressions, also mixed up. (Slide 6) Explain that now
they’ll talk about their REAL past experiences. To help them with that, there are words and
phrases that set a time frame; for example, yesterday, this morning, etc. Explain that these words
can be used at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. (Use example on slide)
o 5:15 – Model and Play! First draw a word or phrase from the pile outside the cup (demonstrate,
show to the class what word you got). Then, draw a verb from the cup (demonstrate, show to the
class what word you got). Finally, think of a sentence of an activity that you performed using the
words you’ve drawn. Preferably true. “I got the phrase last week and the verb have. Last week, I
had a party at my friend’s house.” Give them time to play and circle to evaluate performance,
help those who need. (Obj. 2a)

Summary
o 5:20 – Bring the class together and talk about the three sound patterns of pronunciation they
learned today. Ask for one example for each pattern.
o Remind them again about the mid-term party.
o Thank them for their participation! See you tomorrow!(Slide 8)

Contingency plan
o If there is time left, using the cups and mixed words, have them write 2-3 sentences about
themselves or their partners. They can switch papers with someone in their groups and have them
check for accuracy.
