MODEL: SINGLE PHASE HEAT EXCHANGER

Module: TPT Week: Date: -

Leaning Outcomes: By the end of the lesson student will be able to:
 Analyze the relationship between mass flow and heat transfer
 Demonstrate skills such as observation, critical thinking, sharing ideas, communication,
writing skills etc.

Exchanger Mass Flow and Heat Transfer Relationship:

The shell side and the tube side heat transfer coefficients are directly proportional to the shell
side mass flow and the tube side mass flow respectively. If the mass flows increase, the
individual heat transfer coefficients increase. Thereby the overall heat transfer coefficient
increases and hence the heat transfer increases.

Procedure:

a. Load the Design Operating Condition of the model "Single Phase Heat Exchanger".
b. Note down the process value (PV) of E300 Cold Water Supply Flow (FI300), E300 Hot
Water Supply Flow (FC320) and the Heat Transfer Rate (see process information of
E300).
c. Take TC330 on manual to keep constant cold water supply flow rate.
d. Increase the set point of FC320 from 40 T/H to 70.0 T/H. (with regular intervals)
e. Run the model to steady state.
f. Note down the new PV of E300 Cold Water Supply Flow (FI300), E300 Hot Water
Supply Flow (FC320) and the Heat Transfer Rate.

Observation and Analysis: -

Learning Points: - (Any Two)

Load the Design Operating Condition of the model "Single Phase Heat Exchanger". Take TC330
on manual. Increase cold water supply flow rate by increasing the output (OP) of TC330 from 40%
to 70%. Note down the observations and compare it with the above responses.
