Q.2 What is pronunciation? What is the importance of correct pronunciation?

Ans. Pronunciation is the way in which a word or a language is spoken. This may refer to generally
agreed-upon sequences of sounds used in speaking a given word or language in a
specific dialect ("correct pronunciation"), or simply the way a particular individual speaks a word or
language.

Pronunciation is the most important and difficult problem that non-native English
speakers have to face when studying English. Improper pronunciation can lead to
negative impression, misunderstanding and ineffective communication. This page is
designed to indicate some negative impacts of poor pronunciation and to provide you
with some tips for the improvement.

Q.3 What do you understand by articulators (Speech Organs)?

Ans. Speech organs or articulators, produce the sounds of language. Organs used

for speech include the lips, teeth, alveolar ridge, hard palate, velum (soft palate), uvula, glottis and
various parts of the tongue. They can be divided into two types: passive articulators and active
articulators. Active articulators move relative to passive articulators, which remain still, to produce
various speech sounds, in particular manners of articulation. The upper lip, teeth, alveolar ridge, hard
palate, soft palate, uvula, and pharynx wall are passive articulators. The most important active
articulator is the tongue as it is involved in the production of the majority of sounds. The lower lip is
another active articulator. But glottis is not an active articulator because it is only a space between
vocal folds.
 Draw a figure indicating articulators.

4. Pitch - A black or dark viscous substance obtained as a residue in the distillation

of organic materials and especially tars.

5. Tone - A sound of definite pitch and vibration.

Q.5 Explain the concept and types of communication.

Ans. Communication can be categorized into three basic types: (1) verbal
communication, in which you listen to a person to understand their meaning; (2) written
communication, in which you read their meaning; and (3) nonverbal communication, in
which you observe a person and infer meaning. Each has its own advantages,
disadvantages, and even pitfalls.

 Verbal Communication

Verbal communications in business take place over the phone or in person. The
medium of the Message is oral. Let’s return to our printer cartridge example. This time,
the Message is being conveyed from the Sender (the Manager) to the Receiver (an
employee named Bill) by telephone. We’ve already seen how the Manager’s request to
Bill (“We need to buy more printer toner cartridges”) can go awry. Now let’s look at how
the same Message can travel successfully from Sender to Receiver.

 Storytelling

Storytelling has been shown to be an effective form of verbal communication; it serves

an important organizational function by helping to construct common meanings for
individuals within the organization.

 Crucial Conversations

While the process may be the same, high-stakes communications require more
planning, reflection, and skill than normal day-to-day interactions at work. Examples of
high-stakes communication events include asking for a raise or presenting a business
plan to a venture capitalist.

 Written Communication

In contrast to verbal communications, written business communications are printed

messages. Examples of written communications include memos, proposals, e-mails,
letters, training manuals, and operating policies. They may be printed on paper,
handwritten, or appear on the screen. Normally, a verbal communication takes place in
real time. Written communication, by contrast, can be constructed over a longer period
of time.

Q.6 How many skils of communication are there?

Ans. There are four important skils of communication are as follows :-

1. Listening

2. Reading

3. Speaking

4. Writing

communication. Man has developed new devices of communication. These devices are:
-

 Mobile phone

 Telephone

 Intercom

 Telegram

Dear Manager
RE: COMPLAINT ABOUT FAULTY TELEVISION CABINET PURCHASED AT CABINET
WORLD ON 16-APRIL-2018
I am unhappy with the quality of a television cabinet I bought at 5 Street on 15
December and I am writing to seek a replacement.
The cabinet doors do not open and shut properly and the stain on the cabinet is uneven,
with one half darker than the other. The cabinet was delivered on 14 – April and I
noticed this problem as soon as I unpacked it from the box.
The cabinet  is not of acceptable quality and does not match the sample cabinet I was
shown in store. I would like you to replace it with one of the same quality and finish as
the sample and arrange for return of the faulty cabinet at no cost.
I have attached a photocopy of my receipt as proof of purchase.
I would like to have this problem fixed quickly please. If I do not hear from you within 10
days, I will lodge a formal complaint with Consumer Affairs in my state.
You can contact me on 1234 5678 during working hours or after hours on 123 456

Yours sincerely,
