- Influence of Engineering, Technology, and Science on Society
and the Natural World

ESS3C: Human Impacts on Earth Spaces
Materials and Technology:
preparation - Smartboard
- Doc Cam (to read book under)
Materials:
- This Little House book
- Enough books/copies for partner groups to share (12
total)
- Sentence strip with word “urbanization” printed (word wall)

Classroom - Morning Journal Question: What is your favorite part about

arrangement and your neighborhood?
management issues - Starts the day with students thinking about their
surrounding neighborhood
- This will be one of the final Cause and Effect lessons -
Students should have a strong grasp of the concept prior but
will briefly review prior to the lesson to support students in
need of a refresher
- Students will be on the carpet for the read aloud, will need a
folder, pencil and the cause and effect sheet.
- Partner work will be completed at their ELA partner spots

Plan: Hook (5 minutes)

1. The “hook” Today, you are going to work as a detective to identify the cause and
2. The body effect relationships during our Read Aloud of the book This Little
3. Closure (if House. In the book, the narrator is a small house in the country. The
appropriate) area surrounding the house undergoes a lot of changes as the city
comes in. When cities start to build up, it is called “urbanization.”
● Show word urbanization on sentence strip
○ Based on the word, what do you think that means?
■ Highlight “urban” if silence
● Refer to the Cause and Effect chart
○ While I am reading, we are going to pay attention to
the effect that urbanization had on the Little House.
During the whole group reading, we will share specific
examples of cause and effect relationships we identify
in the book, and then you will complete the
remainder of the chart with your partner using your
own copy of the book to pull evidence from the text.
Body (15 minutes)
● Read Aloud: This Little House
○ Model thinking when identifying a cause and effect
relationship -
■ Write example into document projected on
doc cam (refer to “The Little House_Cause and
Effect” document for reference)
○ Turn and Talk:
■ What is one effect you notice that
urbanization is having on the house?
● Write down the effect
■ What caused this/these effect/s?
● Record on the chart
● Partner Work: (10 minutes)
○ work with your partner to identify two cause and effect
relationships in the book that we have not listed.
■ Use specific evidence from the text - list page
number
○ Show Country vs city comparison sheet
■ List characteristics of the country, and
characteristics of the city
■ Choose one characteristic of the country, and
one of the city to write on post-it notes
■ Put post-it notes on the T-chart
○ Extension: Discuss
■ What do you think causes the difference
between the city and the country?
■ What is the main idea of the text?
Whole Group Closing (5 minutes)
○ Country vs City comparison
■ What is the main idea from the Little House?
What is the message the author is trying to
convey?
■ List characteristics of the country (in country
picture) on chart
■ List characteristics of the city based on the
book, and personal experience in the city
■ Have arrow in between to list:
■ What do you think causes these differences?
● Exit Ticket (time permitting, give during post-lunch hodge
podge if needed):
○ Write for three minutes about what you think causes
the changes from the country to the city? What is your
opinion about the city versus the country?
● Collect Cause and Effect and main idea slips and exit tickets

Closing Points:
Over the course of the next two weeks - we are going to look more
closely at the impact of industrialization on the way that the land
changes and the amount of green space - grass, trees, parks,
playgrounds - that are in a city.

Cause and Effect relationships are important to notice in text in order

to better understand what you are reading - examples of cause and
effect relationships also occur in real life situations. On your way
home today, I want you to take a look around the neighborhood and
notice the different types of land and buildings that you see and think
about - what caused this to be here? How is this different or the
same to other areas in the city? We will continue to explore this
during the next two weeks and will update our “country to city” cause
and effect chart with things that you notice over the next two weeks.

Assessment of - Cause and Effect Sheet

goals/objectives - Team post-it notes (show compare and contrast)
listed above: - Conferencing with partnerships during work time

Anticipating students’ - Potential confusion about what cause and effect is:
responses and your - Reiterate - in examples of cause and effect, the thing
possible responses: that causes something will always happen before the
effect. This doesn’t always occur within the text, but
it’s important to think through - what would happen
first?
- Confusion about “industrialization”
- Have the word written out with a definition for
students to refer back to
Accommodations: - Students will turn in their cause and effect sheet -- for
students that show confusion about the concept and
connection to our real life, I will pull a small group to review
the activity and concept of cause and effect during
Independent Reading Time
- Pre-write cause and effect examples from text, have student
sort them into the appropriate categories, as needed.
- Guide students to specific pages and list either the cause or
effect
