 In the article, A Systematic Review of Tablet Computers and Portable Media

Players as Speech Generating Devices for Individuals with Autism Spectrum
Disorder the authors discuss how handheld devices can be useful in generating
speech for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study is to
compare these hand held device to picture exchange services or sign language. The
authors estimate that 30% of individuals diagnosed with ASD fail to develop vocal
output capabilities. By using sign language only trained persons, can interact with
the person using it, if the person with ASD uses an alternative form of
communication they can easily communicate with a waiter or store clerk. In the first
study they chose to use an iPod Touch with 17 year old persons with ASD, with
effective results shown by asking for food and receiving it. Next, they used a iPad
for 4 and 5 year olds, and had successful results when the children asked for a toy
and received the toy.

 In the article the relationship between efficacy and the instructional practices of special
education teachers and consultants, the authors main purpose is research the is to see how
students react to two types of special educators. There are direct service providers who
provided direct instruction or behavioral interventions to students with mild disabilities.
There are also indirect service providers, who spent at least 50% of their time consulting ,
collaborating, or team teaching with general educators. The teachers were scored on
efficacy as well as their feelings that affect the students. Teaching efficacy, is the believe
that students benefit from schooling. They found that using a combination of both styles
would be the best for the students.
