STEM Subject: Science STEM Lesson: The Life Cycle of a Butterfly & The
Needs of Living Things
Materials:
● Drawing the Life Cycle of a Butterfly worksheet
● Coloring Materials (markers, colored pencils, crayons, ect.)
● The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
● Projector
● Paper
Have a butterfly enclosure with a caterpillar in it and ask students what they know about
caterpillars then explain how the caterpillar being there relates to the lesson. Tell students if
they behave well and can stay on task then the caterpillar can stay in the classroom until it
hatches.
TEACHING
Modeling: (I do)
Show pictures of real eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies to your students.
Identify a few
During the reading, make quick pauses to check for understanding about the concepts in the book.
Model a think aloud about how to make connections between the book and their previous experiences
in life and what they've seen in the lesson so far.
share with the class about any connection you might have between the text and any real world events.
Bilingual Modifications: English language learners will be grouped with bilingual students to
assist them with project. Spanish speaking students will write responses in their own language.
The ESL instructor will make student assessments in collaboration with Teacher.
