Air Pollution Chart

After reviewing Ch. 8 and 9 of your text, complete the following table, then respond to the
questions that follow:

Issue Sources Health/Environmental Effects

Carbon dioxide (CO2) Motor vehicles, poisonous and reduces the blood's ability to
industries transport oxygen, headache and fatigue at
lower levels; mental impairment , can be
fatal at high levels
Chlorofluorocarbons Formed in Irritates eyes; irritates respiratory tract;
(CFCs) atmosphere produces chest discomfort; aggravates
respiratory conditions such as asthma and
chronic bronchitis

Ground-level ozone (O3) human-made air smog, ozone reduces air visibility and causes
pollutant, vehicles, health problems, Irritates eyes; irritates
factories respiratory tract; produces chest discomfort;
aggravates respiratory conditions such as
asthma and chronic bronchitis

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) soil particles, soot, Aggravates respiratory illnesses; long-term
lead, asbestos, sea exposure may cause increased incidence of
salt, and sulfuric acid chronic conditions such as bronchitis
droplets, Industries,
motor vehicles

Note: Some pollutants may not have direct health effects.

Choose one of the following atmospheric issues: air pollution, global warming, ozone depletion,
and acid deposition. Then, respond to the following:
 What air pollutants combine and contribute to this issue?
 Briefly describe the health and environmental problems caused by the selected
atmospheric issue.
 Provide one key solution to help either reduce the effects or recover from the
effects of the selected issue.

There are many sources that contribute to the air pollution. Two main human sources

are transportation, and industries better known as vehicles and factories. However there

are also natural resources that contribute to the air pollution “such as smoke from a forest

fire ignited by lightning or gases from an erupting volcano.”

Due to the air pollution there is several health and environmental issues. “Air

pollutants harm the respiratory tracts of animals, including humans, and can worsen

existing medical conditions such as chronic lung disease, pneumonia, and cardiovascular

problems. Most forms of air pollution reduce the overall productivity of crop plants, and

when combined with other environmental stressors, such as low winter temperatures or

prolonged droughts, air pollution causes plants to decline and die.”

One solution to help reduce the effects of air pollution is to walk or ride a bike instead

of driving a vehicle. Vehicles are one of the main factors in air pollution. If everyone was

to walk or ride their bike more often this would help cut the air pollution.
