About The Workshop
The external insulation in the EHV/UHV range AC transmission system is generally
designed on the basis of switching over voltage level. The insulation would also be
sufficient for power frequency over voltages under clean and wet conditions. Extreme
environmental conditions and high pollution areas such as industrial, desert and
coastal regions cause excessive leakage currents. The performance of insulators as
a function of the degree of pollution accumulated on them has been investigated by
many research laboratories employing different test methods. As per their findings,
there is a definite relation that exists between the specific creepage distances to the
degree of pollution accumulation. IEC 60815 also suggests use of insulators of
different specific creepage distances for different site pollution severity levels. The
pollution performance of different types of insulators mainly depend on their
geometrical and mechanical characteristics and the choice of insulators to be used
in different pollution intensities depends on the risk of failure of insulator for a given
pollution conditions. The surface condition of an insulator in such areas will
subsequently lead to a pollution flashover and power system outages. To avoid the
electrically conductive layer, resulting from an accumulation of pollutants in
combination with moisture, frequent washing or greasing of the insulators is
necessary to ensure safe operation. The consequences are high maintenance cost
and profit losses because of regular station shut downs and interruptions in electricity
supply. The need for reliable power networks, the avoidance of blackouts, and
substation shutdowns due to frequent maintenance procedures led the insulation
industry to react.

In view of the above, it is intended to organize a One-day Workshop on

“Choice of Insulators in High Voltage Transmission System for different
Environmental Conditions”

TOPICS
The major topics covered are as follows:
 Pollution Phenomenon and Methods of assessing pollution severity at site.
 Design of outdoor Insulation from the point of view of pollution and pollution test
methods.
 Remedial measures for pollution problem & Environmental Conditions.
 Understanding of RTV silicone Rubber insulation coating & advantages of RTV
coating.
 New design, Porcelain, Glass insulators, Polymer insulators, RTV coated
insulators for various pollution conditions.
